I have a whole bunch of books sitting in my bookcase that maybe I’ve read parts of, or that I’ve read once and maybe found some temporary inspiration for a day or so, but now they just sit there. They didn't really make any lasting difference in my life. But this book is radically unique in that I actually use it over and over again. It’s not a book that you read and put on a shelf to collect dust. It’s a practical tool you can actually use, like a compass. You learn a whole new way of being in this world. Or should I say you RE-learn a whole new way of being in this world. These potent activities help you reconnect with the purity of self you were born with before this crazy world filled us all with needless doubt, fear and judgment. Dr. Sweeney's process for creatively exchanging energy with Nature is the fastest route to insight and healing that I have ever experienced.
But this book has so much potential beyond our own personal experiences; it reaches to all who are in need of a conscious shift towards total wellness. If person by person this shift happens, the colossal shift that is needed to change our destructive course with the Earth will happen. As minds begin to shift internally, the external world starts to heal. If I could, I’d buy every person in the world a copy of this powerful book. Dr. Sweeney's work is a much needed gift to this planet.
Although the author makes little to no reference to the history and techniques of art therapy, after reading, I realize it may have taken away from the message (particularly in assuming the book is not geared toward art therapists). As I said, the spirit is there. I still think it would be better named "Creative Ecotherapy" or something along those lines, but regardless, each page is filled with wisdom.
If you've read any of Cohen's work, this book will fit right in that library. I thought "Eco-Art Therapy" actually summed up Cohen's work in a more digestible and navigable format, but then again I was reading it with an art-focused brain and have no background in ecopsychology! I would recommend this text to anyone in any field or with any background. It is accessible for any and all.
