I offer the usual caveat. I was given this product in order to review it. I will try to describe the product and performance accurately and comprehensively. But anybody who thinks I can remain unbiased towards a product after getting it for free… well, in the trunk of my car, I have the deed to the Brooklyn Bridge. Yours for a song.
This is the slicing grater (see those slots on the box grater?). It has the great EcoJeannie handle (I rave about their handles in the review on the 6” ceramic Chef’s knife – enough). A very graspable surface with a large hole in the handle so you can hang the tool from a hook. The hole is so large, it’s hard to imagine what kind of hook will not fit.
The grating is done by slots which are only a little over ½” wide.
I tried to grate the following items:
Chocolate – splintered into fine long pieces about the width of the slots plus a lot that was more powdery. Suitable for decorating cakes, etc..
cheese – not easy to grate cleanly- produced a combo of tiny slices and shredded chunks. The slices were much thinner than the ones which the box grater produces on the largest setting.
Garlic – similar results as the string cheese. Darn, it was hoping this grater would put the final blow into the garlic chopping problem
Carrot – Did not grate long clean strips of carrot. Did produce uniformly shredded carrot. Great for salads!
Zest - very similar results, You got a combination of chips about the width of the slots and more mangled material. Yes, it can zest, but I prefer finer zest
It was very sharp and easy to grate all of the above items.
Cleanup – was a snap. Like all graters, there was food caught in the back of the unit. Just use your finger to push it out, then you are done. Trivial to just wipe it clean in the sink and put away. There wasn’t any food stuck in the mechanism.
It looks like if you want to buy a set of EcoJeannie grater/zesters then throw out your box grater – you won’t be able to reproduce the largest grating size on the box grater. You might have to use a vegetable peeler if it’s something like carrots. Or if you are like me, you get out the food processor with the grating disk.
Let see now, do I really want to hang onto the box grater because it’s the best for grating mozzarella and the worst at everything else? Am I really so cruel, that I would inflict the box grater on a charity?
I was very excited to receive several items from EcoJeannie to review for my honest opinion. I only review items that I actually use. When I received this, I wasn't sure why I'd want it, but thought I'd try it just in case it helped me in some way.
I made some tostadas the other day and wanted to add some cheese. It wasn't crumbling like I wanted - it was a crumbling cheese, but acted more like a mozzarella - so I decided to try this zester. Within moments, I had a mound of delicately zested cheese. I truly was surprised. There was no cheese stuck to it (could have been the type of cheese) and the zester cleaned easily.
Normally I'd not give something 5 stars without using it more and for more things...but even if I can only use this for cheese, it's totally worth it. Looking forward to trying it on lemon rind as the microplane worked, but not as well as I would like.
🐭 Also, according to the product's description, this is also rust-free/dishwasher safe - which so far, is true. I look forward to using this next time I make a French Silk pie, as this will work perfectly for the thin curl shavings of chocolate, to place on top - which is one thing that the 4 sided grater does not do all that great of a job of. :)
*This product was sent to me at a discount/or for free, in order to provide feedback based on my own personal experience with the product. I do not promise a good star rating in return, nor am I in any way affiliated with this company.
