Pump performance chart

We bought this pump to use for irrigating our garden from the small backyard "pond" that is fed by water from the basement sump pump. We figured the smallest size (75 GPH) would be just fine. However, the product information did not include anything about pumping height. The smallest unit only goes about 2 feet high, and wouldn't make it as high as our planter on the patio. Had to return it. But the box has a good chart on it, to help in a future purchase. Take a look at the photo attached, to see what size of a pump you might need.

It worked fine when I tested it

I was excited to see a pump with a bottom draw, as I use it in hydroponics, and when I change the solution, I want to remove as much as possible. Typical fountain pumps can leave as much as 2" in the bottom that they can't pick up. So, I bought this. It worked fine when I tested it, but upon using it, it was quite noisy. But, it ran fine for about 2 weeks, running 24-7. Then, I needed to change the solution, and during the pump out, it became noisier and then quit pumping, though it was still running. To make matters worse, the maker has chosen to protect the 'motor' from moisture by sealing the entire unit in epoxy (I have to wonder if the real motive was to prevent repairs!). Maybe all submersibles are made this way, but it certainly makes it impossible to analyze the failure mode, or attempt to do any repairs to the pump. Therefore, it was a waste of money. The maker told me that these are 'magnetic' units. Not at all certain what he meant by that, as it appears to be a simple rotating impeller on the end of a motor shaft. If you consider how they operate, all electric motors that rotate are magnetic, so for them to say that because these are 'magnetic' as a reason why they cannot run against a valve that is limiting their output without getting noisy and eventually failing. If this is the case, then the makers could have very easily thought to advise you of this in the product listing, or at least in the instructions. Also, it would have been very easy for the makers to have designed a small slider valve that, instead of making the pump run against a pressure created by a downstream valve being used to regulate the flow rate, would instead restrict its input, achieving the same thing as a valve downstream from the pump. I've seen fountain pumps with this feature, but not with a bottom draw feature. This is under warranty, so I will be making a warranty claim, and the next time I use one of these, I'll hot weld a small piece of plastic over the intake to restrict the pump's output. However, I think it's worth noting that even though I did operate it against a pressure, it didn't fail until I ran it wide open & unrestricted. Then, it failed after pumping appx 9 gallons of liquid! If you're considering this pump, please also consider this limitation. Personally, I get the feeling that the maker has been cheap in their design and build. It didn't have to be that way!

Unbelievably Quiet!

This pump is amazing. I bought it for a 120 gallon aquarium with a sump. The prior pump was LOUD - I had to place it on a piece of foam to try and muffle the vibrations. Even still I could hear it through the wall or from the room below. Then it started making weird noises like it was dying, so I thought I do a little research and see if I couldn't find something better.

I found the EcoPlus recommended on Aquarium forums as one of the quietest pumps out there. And by golly it is. It is so quiet that after I installed it, my roommate came to warn me that my pump had died and wasn't working because he couldn't hear it. In the same room I have a 20 Gallon also with a Whisper Filter on the back, and the trickle of water from that makes far more noise than the EcoPlus.

If you're looking for an ultra-quiet pump, this is the one!

A Good Choice for In-line or Submersible Use!

I bought this pump to use in line with a TetraPond Submersible Flat Box Filter (which I also recommend highly). It came with a good selection of hose adapters which were plenty heavy and utilized o-ring seals. If this unit is to be used intact as a submersible pump the cover, which must be removed for in-line service, fits well and offers a nice fitting pre-filter to keep trash, etc. out of the impeller. The power cord is quite substantial and long enough to work well in an outdoor situation. The pump is quiet and sits on rubber vibration dampening feet, which would be a plus for indoor operation. I am very pleased with this purchase.

It runs quietly and pumps an amazing amount of water

I bought this to circulate ice water through an immersion chiller for cooling wort while homebrewing. It works fantastically for that because it comes with a number of discharge pipe adapters for any hose size you might use. It runs quietly and pumps an amazing amount of water, plenty to cool down a 7 gallon batch of wort from 100 degrees F to 65 degrees F in about 10 minutes when circulating ice water through 50' of 1/2" copper. It would probably work just as well with a counterflow chiller.

Only downside is that this will not push water too far up hill. If it's on the floor next to my brew stand it won't work nearly as well as if it's within 2' vertically of the cooler. That's not a big deal, my ice bucket is on a table next to the brew pot anyway.
