Small Pod Ecosphere (5. 25" tall) with turntable base. This fascinating enclosed world contains 3 to 4 marine shrimp, algae and micro-organisms. Made from hand blown glass, each Ecosphere is a completely enclosed, self-sustaining little world. The Ecosphere only needs indirect light and comfortable room temperature (between 60F and 80F. ) The Ecosphere works on the basis that a closed system recycles its nutrients and does not produce excess waste. The shrimp consume the algae and micro-organisms and they, in turn, break down the shrimp waste. External light, either artificial or natural, keeps the algae growing. There is no feeding or water changes required. Each Ecosphere comes with a replacement, recharge or upgrade policy.

I'm not a Peta person by any means, I think they are nuts, but I do believe if you keep an animal that you keep it properly. Properly kept these shrimp will live upwards of 20 years and will breed in captivity. Your ecosphere will mostly dwindle away with all the shrimp dead in a few years. The reason the shrimp survive at all is because they are so tough they can survive low oxygen and food environments for many years at a time. In reality the ecosphere is a slow starvation for your shrimp.
These shrimp are seriously cool, active, a joy to watch... Just do it the right way.
Go to petshrimp.com, read the tutorials, buy commercially bred, ethical shrimp, and build yourself a tank that is infinitely more interesting and be part of a small but active community of opa ule shrimp breeders
It was cool at first. Really fun, and the maintenance-free aspect was quite appealing. Two months later, and all are dead except one. Don't know what got them, but one died, then two at once. Now we have a lonely one (the most sluggish) that I hope gets put out of his misery. I have a feeling he will survive in solitary confinement for years because that's what this area can support. Refilling it shouldn't be a problem for the business owners (shrimp breeding is cheap), except their website has so many limits on it and those are written with such a harsh tone. Plus, we're only a few hours from their tiny building in Tucson, yet they demand $28 for return shipping. If shipping alone costs that much, how is the business even worth the effort? Great concept, and I wish it worked, but I don't think we lucked out on this one. Maybe the ridiculously expensive bigger spheres work better. It's not sealed glass, either. There's a plastic cap on the bottom. Really diminishes the cool factor. I have a snow globe I can't shake. Oh well.
Both of us are absolutely obsessed with it.
It came with 4 shrimp in it and a small piece of algae that managed to grow at least 6 times its size since then.
Our shrimp are very happy living in their eco-home on our dining room table.
It's very relaxing watching them swim around all day and it's definitely a conversation starting piece. Everyone that has come into our home was mesmerized by what it is.
Before ordering, I was worried that the size of it would be too small based on other reviews, however, I was pleasantly surprised at the fact that the size of it is great!
We have had it for about 2 months now and it's still not dirty, the shrimp are still alive and everything looks great.
I would highly recommend purchasing this ecosphere!
I have counted eight little guys or girls in there. They were already swimming pretty quickly as soon as I took them out of the box and it's about 85° here today. I actually waited a week before ordering them because it was 100° here last week and it was too hot to ship them I thought. I took a video and it's not giving me the option to upload it so I could show everyone. I bought them to put in my office but it says you can't put them by a computer or anything that puts off heat, so I'm bummed about that but I don't want to hurt them.
They are really much smaller than I thought they would be, but I'm glad I got the large one because I think the small one would be too small for me to see. I took a video for everyone so you can see they look like they are having a lot of fun and are extremely active. It was kind of expensive but I think it was worth it because they are so cute and I pray they live for years to come.
Now, it's been almost 3 months since receiving them, and ALL 8 shrimp are alive and doing well! We have not had to "clean" the inside with the magnet at all - it's a very well-balanced ecosystem.
