At first I was apprehensive about the CR123 battery, only because it's somewhat of a specialty battery. It's offset by the manufacturer's claim that the battery will last 5-years. It's been a couple of months and they're still reporting as 100% so their claim might be valid.
This sensor has internal screw terminals for use with an external sensor, such as a magnetic reed switch. The two seem to be wired in parallel so for all practical purposes you must choose one or the other (e.g., if you wanted to use this for two windows that were side-by-side you couldn't use the internal and external sensors as they would only trigger if both windows were open at the same time, you'd have to use two external sensors and wire them in series). I wish you could select different behavior for this feature. I wish it could give some indication as to which one was tripped as I have external reed switches on my storm doors from an earlier set of X10-compatible door/window sensors that could differentiate between the two, which I previously used to trigger an alarm condition for my security DVR to begin recording so I wouldn't have to rely on motion sensing alone. FWIW, the Monoprice Z-Wave+ door/window sensor will trigger an alarm condition if either of the inputs is triggered independently, though as far as I can tell it does not specify which one.
I am using this with OpenHAB through a Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Wave Z-Stick, Gen5 (ZW090). I discovered the best way to include this in your network is to put the controller in include mode first, then pull the plastic battery tab. Once that is complete and the system is running normally, remove the cover then press the tamper switch one time. This should cause the sensor to send the necessary information to the controller to provide normal function. My only gripe is there are no Configuration Parameters or Association Groups available in OpenHAB, but that is the fault of OpenHAB and has not affected function.
In summary, an excellent Z-Wave door/window sensor that provides a variety of mounting options. If the internal and external inputs could trigger independently and report to individual endpoints this would easily be 5 stars.
Both the STM and this (this review was for the Z-Wave version, not the Z-Wave Plus) sensor are still functioning well. Neither batteries have died, this reports 100% battery life remaining, the STM reports 89% remaining. For the price, this sensor definitely is worth the slightly bulkier dimensions. I've also added a few IRIS ZigBee Door/Window opening sensors from Lowe's that I figure would be worth adding to this review.
All of the devices work consistently at their primary function. The Z-Wave devices (STM and this Ecolink) seem to hold their battery life longer, although I have yet to have any batteries die from any of these sensors so it may just be how accurate they report battery level and it's just too early to tell for sure.
The "bonus" functionality from the STM - 3-Axis gyro ("garage door motion detector") and temp sensor have still not become useful in my setup. The Iris ZigBee devices also have temperature sensors. I assume all of the sensors are accurate, however all but one are attached to windows/exterior doors so the temperature is heavily influenced by outside temperatures more than ambient air temperature inside my home. The one attached to an interior door does seem to be relatively accurate and if I needed to perform automation based on the temperature in that room, it is a potential nice-to-have. The ZigBee devices are currently $22 at Lowe's, but have gone on sale occasionally and they're available inside various kits (automation, home security, etc) that can drop their price if you're interested in the other sensors in the kit. Given the same price point of this Ecolink sensor, Monoprice's Z-Wave sensor, and the Iris ZigBee sensors at Lowe's, when I decide to add additional sensors to my home I'm likely to buy whichever one is on sale at the time.
I'll update again if/when something changes.
Solid device, connected easily, "feels cheap".
I bought this to compare to the Samsung SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor (STM from here on out) to decide which I wanted to deploy around my house. As of the date I purchased them, the Ecolink was ~$29, and the STM was ~$36. One important difference is that the STM can also be used to detect vibrations (for things like Garage Doors), and it has a temp sensor. Those weren't deciding factors for me, but might be for you.
The biggest differences that I found were the size and attention to detail. The Ecolink was almost double the length, but slightly less wide. It also came with interchangeable colored "shells" in case your door/window isn't hospital white. But for me, white was just fine. They both paired fairly easily with my SmartThings hub, so no problem there. Ultimately it came down to the "feel" of build quality as well as the size. The STM device is about the size of a small metal altoids tin, maybe 1 and 3/4 inches long by 1 inch wide by about 1/3 inches deep. The magnet chicklet piece that gets interrupted to let you know the door/window is open is about the same size on both devices. The build quality on the STM seems a lot more on par with something that will last for a long time and didn't seem like a quickly designed device to get something on the market.
The size of this device was about the size of a 5-stick pack of Wrigley's gum. Maybe 2 and 1/2 inches long, 3/4 of an inch wide, and 1/2 inch deep. The battery in this was a cylinder style "camera" battery that you can likely find in most grocery stores near the other batteries. The battery in the STM was a flat button style (CR1025-like) battery that you'd likely find somewhere near a pharmacy in a grocery store. The battery choice on this definitely made the device much larger than it otherwise could have been.
If anything changes between these 2 devices (one dies early or becomes glitchy) I'll update this review.
