In my last career as a Safety consultant for the insurance industry, I was often involved with helping people prepare for emergencies. Especially after 9/11, there was a greater interest in emergency preparedness. During this time, I often scoured FEMA and other government websites for information. A lot of this information was helpful in preparing to help other people prepare themselves for disasters. However, I don't believe I found such a comprehensive AND easy to follow step by step guideline to prepare your food storage as this. It is VERY comprehensive.

I do think this is more oriented toward the type of person that really wants to know just about everything about a subject (like myself). If you are looking for a quick overview of what to do, I would probably go with some government stuff, but if you want somebody to really educate you comprehensively about food storage for disaster preparedness, this book is a great buy. I think the price point is well worth the convenience of not having to put a lot of different sources of info together.

I read this book, and found it not only very timely but very thorough in its treatment of making sure that your family is prepared without breaking the bank to do so. Perhaps the single best piece of advice she offers is not to wait until you have the funds to put together your whole list, but to do what you can today, right now to get started. She also advises making a checklist of needs and seeing what steps you can take, rather than putting it off until everything can be done at once. Another thing I especially appreciated was her chapter on fishing, and a very creative tip offered was how to make a fishing net using spider webs and sticks. That piece of advice alone may well save someone from starvation.

This is an excellent book for the fairly-new survivalist. It is not judgemental; it tells the reader to work with their own tastes when it comes to building a personal food supply. One of the big survivalist arguments over the years is the split between the advice to buy "real" and "good" foods for storage (meaning wheat berries, steel oats and so on) and the other camp, which says to buy what you usually eat. This book takes the perspective that just getting started is half the battle. However, the author does point out that if the going gets really bad.....bug burgers will keep you alive. Personally, I don't ever want to have to eat a bug burger, but thanks to this book, I now know how, just in case. Definitely worth a read.

I was really impressed with this guide! If you think that disaster will never strike, think again! I remember as a child being stuck in our house with 7 children for 3 days due to a terrible snow storm. We ran out of everything! You dont have to be a fantic about it, but even following some of the tips in here could come in very handy.

This author is no fanatical doom-and-gloomer who tries to scare the pants off of readers. Her suggestions make a lot of sense. They are practical, and she doesn't recommend that you run out right this minute and buy enough to last a family of five for a whole month. She guides you through a gradual process, beginning with evaluating what you currently have on your shelves as well as your budget. Then she helps you start small to make the changes that will add up and get you prepared in case of an emergency. A first goal might be having enough on hand for 72 hours, for example. The author also helps you identify the most important items to stock on your shelves, and she talks about how to store the foods and how to make sure you don't have to replace everything at once. The author also discusses preparing your own bottled water vs buying water, as well as doing your own canning or dehydrating vs using store-bought canned goods. She also makes a good point--don't buy something that your family won't eat! Instead, buy a small packet of a new type of item and try it out now to see if they will eat it. Although it's true we humans will eat what we have to when we are starving, there's no reason you have to stock up with foods that your family can't stand!

I am not in a high disaster area, but there are still many good ideas just for myself. There are some good ideas of how to stock up on food supplies, just in case something happens. None of us know when or if we will ever have a need, but I highly recommend it for everyone!

I'm a newbie to the particular information contained in this book. Not all of it, yet, a huge portion of it. For me this book has been informative and very interesting. I am still reading it. Not that I'm going to apply any of this immediate. Although, some maybe. Also when running a large house hold, being the sole responsible individual for the cooking, cleaning, storing and general insuring that we as a family never run out of just basic necessities. The house hold caretaker/organizer I find it best to be as knowledgeable as humanly possible in any area in which one works. Thus is why I purchased this read. It has delivered. Thank you to the writer and to the publisher as well. I am pleased with it.

I was able to read the whole guide in just a couple hours, including stopping to reread sections and take plenty of notes. Honestly, I think the only thing I would change would be to have this in print form, since I won't have it online in case of an emergency. Since I would hope to make use of much of this information well in advance of said emergency, however, I still consider it worth the purchase.
