I’ve been in a bit of a book funk as of late and just haven’t found anything that could hold my attention. I found The Edge of Darkness in my Kindle library yesterday and decided to give it a try and I’m so glad I did.
The Edge of Darkness by Melissa Andrea is a well-written, engaging story about tragedy, love, and lies. Emotionally gripping tragedy mixed with sweet romance and first time love. At 414 pages, I had this read in an evening although I did stay up way passed by bed-time. \old from dual point of views, we see the struggles that both Araya and Ryland face with their families, his siblings, and their attraction to one another.
Romance, new friendships, and a lot of emotions are revealed throughout the story. Only downfall with the story is that it is a cliffhanger, but it isn’t a hold-your-breath-edge-of-your-seat cliffhanger. It’s one that leaves you wondering what’s going to happen next in their lives and I for one will be reading The Grace in Darkness (Book 2).
As far as originality goes, A+. Storyline, A+. Writing style, eh, I struggled a bit. I'm not saying it was written wrong. I'm just saying I struggled with the style. I prefer writing that flows very much in sync with how people think. There was just something about it that gave me a hard time. That said...I still loved it, because the storyline was THAT good.
I can't delve too much into the storyline, because I don't want to give away what makes the story so different. Part of the fun is figuring that out as you read. I'll tease you a little bit and tell you what I loved...
The minute I started this story it took my breath away. THAT. PROLOGUE. Oh my goodness, best prologue ever. Brilliant! It's almost like reading in flashes. Suspenseful flashes are the best way I can explain it. Very cool.
The story itself is about two characters that come from very unhappy households. Ryland comes from a very wealthy family that is all about appearances and social status. They aren't nearly as picture perfect as their parents would like them to appear. From high expectations to parents that fight all the time, he and his siblings are miserable living at home (that's putting it gently). Ryland is just trying to help his little sister, Cara, make it through to graduation, so he can get her out of there and into college. He feels like he can't leave her behind.
Then there's Araya. She lost her mother and much of herself in an accident 4 years ago and is living with her bitter, hateful, nasty aunt. I. HATE. HER.
Ryland and Araya meet at the park, but are surprised to run into each other when Cara starts tutoring Araya. Cara tells Ryland that Araya is off limits to him. She doesn't want Araya to get hurt by Ryland.
We all want what we can't have though...so let this forbidden romance begin...
The circumstances surrounding their story make their romance very intense and passionate. I truly fell in love with the two them. They are drawn to each other when everything else is pulling against them. There are some pretty big twists and turns towards the end. I was on the edge of my seat wondering how it was going to end. I was not expecting a cliffhanger. I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger, but it's definitely an ending that leaves issues unresolved. As much as I hated it, what happened is probably what needed to happen for Araya's sake. I just wish I could get my hands on book 2 now!
P.S. I love Sebastian (spinoff?)
Often I start to read a book and think-oh I know how this will end-sadly I do this a lot. And I am usually right. But not with Melissa Andrea's Edge of Darkness.
The prologue sets up the tone of the story. A bit of desperation, panic and a lot of love. Araya (what a great name BTW) had her life violently altered, losing her mom and dance in one fell swoop. She also has an injury that isn't revealed for several chapters. We learn what this loss is as Ryland (another awesome name) figures it out. First surprise for me, I thought it was her legs.
MA does a wonderful job of keeping the story moving along. Alternating POV chapters gives insight in to both Ryland and Araya's lives.
This is a beautiful love story-two people who couldn't be more different, find each other and the connection is intense.
I love the awkward thoughts and actions of both characters. Also the heart wrenching tenderness they show each other.
They have so many obstacles/people against them for no other reason as it will not benefit them if Araya and Ryland stay together.
Sebastian-broken, and I believe sees himself in Araya
Now on to the tears-the ending. I know this book is a trilogy. I know the HEA that I love was not likely to happen in the first book. I know Araya has to learn to be independent. Ryland has to be patient. Nevertheless it broke my heart!
"You said forever, Araya." I was grasping now.
"Nothing lasts forever, Ryland."
"Then, damn it, let me be your nothing, Araya."
Ryland is finally able to love, found his way to the woman who is perfect for him. But she needs to be his equal and until she finds her way in the world they won't be together.
I am eagerly awaiting the second in this series. Ryland and Araya deserve their HEA. DAMMIT- I need their HEA. And the "obstacles" deserve their comeuppance...
