From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Seventeen-year-old Zoe Bissell has had a rough year. She hasn't been able to find closure following her father's unexpected death in a caving accident and the disappearance of two beloved neighbors. Then, during a harsh winter storm, she and her eight-year-old brother, Jonah, are attacked. X, a handsome and mysterious stranger, comes to their rescue. Unbeknownst to Zoe, X is actually a bounty hunter from a dark, unique area of Hell known as the Lowlands, and he was sent after Zoe's attacker's soul. Despite X's hellacious origins, he and Zoe form an intense connection, and X learns empathy for humans. The romance will not be without consequences, though, as some beings from the Lowlands are not happy about X's and Zoe's intense feelings for each other, and Zoe's friend Dallas could end up with a broken heart. Giles's fantastical novel reads like a blend of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and modern-day horror, such as Stranger Things. Zoe is an empowered, complicated female protagonist with a huge heart, and X is a heartthrob with a twisted past and a thoughtful persona. VERDICT Highly recommended for YA collections.—Margaret A. Robbins, University of Georgia, Athens

Review

"If your jam is bat-out-of-hell pacing, cinematic scenes of otherworldly destruction, snarky comebacks and insta-romance, ’The Edge of Everything’ is a lot of fun. (I do not sneer at fun. Right now, we need fun.) . . . Giles’ vivid portrayals of Montana, the scary thrills of caving, and the rundown hot-spring resort where Zoe’s mom works are a delight. So are X’s friends: a 19th-century lady who killed a servant for spilling the soup, and a dead bartender." - New York Times

"Zoe and X are amazing as leads, but every unique character in this novel imparts his or her own brand of golden deliciousness to the tale. The premise and settings play well with visceral emotions, brought to the surface of the imagination by the story’s heart-searing romance, life-affirming sacrifices and the way true, quiet strength outshines loud and damaging cowardice in this amazingly crafted novel." - USA Today

"With imagination and verve, Giles delivers the goods required by the genre, creating a swoonworthy love interest with a sense of justice and old-fashioned charm." - Time

"Checks all the boxes for crossover appeal: a sassy, independent heroine, a mysterious bounty hunter with supernatural powers, and a gushing blurb from Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson. Smartly written fantasy with depth." - New York Magazine

"Fantasy, romance, horror and sci-fi blend deliciously in Jeff Giles's gripping young adult series debut . . . A gorgeous, unearthly ride." - starred review, Shelf Awareness

"Giles beautifully captures the breathless, visceral, and instant attraction between Zoe and X . . . A rich and satisfying read on multiple levels." - Booklist

"First-time novelist Giles combines an intense thriller plot with one of the oddest afterlifes in recent fantasy . . . Zoe’s mutually devoted relationships with her brother, mother, sardonic lesbian friend, Val, are standouts, as is the endearingly oddball dialogue . . . An intriguing story that leaves the door open for future books." - Publishers Weekly

"Fantastical in nature, this story will keep readers interested until the very end." - School Library Connection

"Reads like a blend of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” and modern-day horror, such as Stranger Things. Zoe is an empowered, complicated female protagonist with a huge heart, and X is a heartthrob with a twisted past and a thoughtful persona . . . Highly recommended." - School Library Journal

"The Lowlands remains an enjoyably creepy shadowy element . . . Readers are advised to dive in now and revel in the star-crossed-lovers glory of it all." - BCCB

"Giles's gripping tale pulls readers through a fast-paced thriller in which Zoe's world converges with X's . . . With strong characters and suspenseful scenes strung one after another, readers enter an amazing work of speculative fiction that pits good against evil, man against man, and man against nature . . . A wholly-engrossing page-turner." - VOYA

"I was drawn into this story from the first page. Jeff Giles has written a gripping, utterly original work of fiction that manages to capture all of the joy and the pain, the light and the darkness of growing up. Beautifully written, this is a powerful work of fierce imagination that takes no prisoners! Be prepared, the world of the Lowlands is treacherous--you will meet many dangerous characters! At turns poignant and funny, the story of Zoe and her fight to save her family and the strange young man known only as 'X' will stay with you long after you finish this extraordinary book." - Peter Jackson, Oscar-winning director of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies

"The Edge of Everything is an utterly fantastic book. Dark, funny, exciting, a unique clashing of worlds--one of those stories you’ll read late into the night. More than anything, I fell in love with the characters, so much so that it truly hurt to see what they had to go through. Every human alive should read this book." - James Dashner, #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE MAZE RUNNER

"A fresh and addictive read that grabbed me from the first page and still hasn't let me go. Jeff Giles led me into the darkness--ultimately reminding me why we should never stop searching for the light." - Kami Garcia, #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling coauthor of BEAUTIFUL CREATURES and author of THE LOVELY RECKLESS

"Sharp, dark, thoughtful and romantic, readers will thrill to the start of this exciting new series." - Cassandra Clare, #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of The Mortal Instruments series

"A dark and suspenseful supernatural thriller that kept me up all night." - Melissa de la Cruz, #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE ISLE OF THE LOST
