What I really wish I'd know and what made it impossible for me to enjoy the book in any way is that in this particular future dystopian world -- wait for it -- woman are powerless, disenfranchised chattel. Available jobs are sex slave, breeder, or cheerful camp girl. Well, there's one king's bodyguard but she has no dialogue or backstory so she doesn't count. Back to the good old days of bonking your chosen women on the head and dragging her back to the cave. I really want to ask the author why she went there, why she imagines women have lost it all in the future. Off the top of my head, I can cite Ilona Andrews, Joss Ware, and Alyssa Cole as authors who write women who've held on to, even gained, power and agency in a post-apocalyptic society.
Lots of kinkdotcom public humiliation sex which would have been okay except for that pesky lack of choice. There's just no getting around the fact that she blows her hero in front of his entire court because she has to prove herself. Or something.
Okay, let me explain. I have read a couple of dystopian stories and both included zombies. I found them both enjoyable. This one is no exception, I LOVED both characters.
Tyr is definitely an alpha male War Chief and Helena is a Mainland Compliant that's anything but.
She is rebellious and determined, he is sexy and commanding. The two together burn up the pages. I think I have a new hot, sexy, dirty, viking-like love......Tyr
There is a kidnapping, a secret mission, and Kralijic, the hated enemy to both.
Good Stuff.....but it did drag a little and the repeat button was hit several times with the mentioning and explanation of the secret mission. We got already.
Because of Tyr's hotness and the fact he was matched with a compatible and not a whiny female partner, this book earned a solid four stars.
