I have never read anything by this author before, but I will definitely watching for other works in the future. I was delighted to read the first book in the Wisdom Court series. It was a fantastic read especially since it centered around older women. It reminded me of a younger version of The Golden Girls TV show. I will continue reading this series.
I felt the pace of the story was smooth and steady, and fast when action occurred. The world building was descriptive with vivid imagery and details without overwhelming the story. The author's ability to create such a story that engulfs your interest, emotions, and feeling were exact. I found the storyline and plots were believable, heartfelt, unique, yet unexpected twist and turns that piqued my curiosity.
The characters involved were just awesome. Some were made to be snarky, sassy, quirky, quite, and bossy, but these attributes were what made the story more enjoyable for me. The friendships developed throughout the story is what made this story more real. They all started out as strangers, and as women they come together while dealing with situations/obstacles that come their way, no matter what it dealt with. As the story progresses, some are closer than others, but they held it together.
The overall summary is that Wisdom Court accepts women with artistic abilities: painting, drawing, writing, spiritual, and so on. They will be given a grant to pursue these talents for one year while living at Wisdom Court. As the next arrival comes in, the founder has died, and strange things begin to happen. As these strange happenings occur, the women will come together and decipher why and what is happening. The founder will be briefly discussed throughout the story, but not a lot is given, which makes me wonder who she was and why she started the Wisdom Court grant. I'm hoping that the author will go into more details as the series progresses.
I found the book cover, title and description fits the story with precision. It captures the readers' attention and interest...Yes, I'm guilty of judging books by it's cover/title/description.
This story does contain light romance, betrayal, suspense, intrigue, hauntings, mentions of murder, and humor. I would recommend this story to all reader's that enjoy these features.
This book had great potential, intriguing characters and a good story. I was excited to read about a forensic artist, this is barely mentioned but was one of my main reasons for choosing this book.
The biggest problem to me was the emotion between characters. The women in the houses could have become so much more as a group. The potential was there, they were quirky and fun. The main character and her love interest were luke warm at best. I felt no connection, it was all very sudden and out of the blue to me. Had the love portion of the story been left out, there could have been time for more character building. I wanted to feel more. I wanted to laugh, fall in love, and be scared out of my wits during this reading. I got 1 of 3, I was semi scared. If I read it alone at night, I would have been.
I almost feel there was too much going on. A gathering of women, which I wanted to see be a huge comedic relief, a mystery and a love story.
That all being said, I didn't hate this book, but it wasn't the best for me. I'm not even sure what ever happened to part of the story. Maybe it wraps up in the second book? I'd read it just to find out, and I'd definitely read more by this author.
