About the Author

Cynthia Ripley Miller is a first generation Italian-American writer with a love for history, languages and books.  She has lived, worked, and travelled in Europe, Africa, North America and the Caribbean.  As a girl, she often wondered what it would be like to journey through time (she still does), yet knew, it could only be through the imagination and words of writers and their stories.  Today, she writes to bring the past to life.

Cynthia holds two degrees and has taught history and teaches English. Her short fiction has appeared in the anthology Summer Tapestry, at Orchard Press Mysteries.com and The Scriptor.  She has reviewed for UNRV Roman History, and blogs at Historical Happenings and Oddities: A Distant Focus and on her website, cynthiaripleymiller.com.

Cynthia has four children and lives with her husband, twin cats, Romulus and Remus, and Jessie, a German Shepherd, in a suburb of Chicago.  On the Edge of Sunrise is the first in the Long-Hair Sagas; a series set in Late Ancient Rome and France and published by Knox Robinson Publishing.

What can you say about Atilla the Hun? Well, he was one nasty dude, but not any more so than the Roman Empire. Both were hungry for control. In On the Edge of Sunrise, we read about two people caught in the crossfire of this power struggle.

Arria is a young widow, who is forced into a marriage to Tribune Drusus, who she despises. She loves another, a forbidden love. Garic is a Frank Warrior, a Long Hair, who Arria falls in love with. She is requested by a Roman commander Aetius to deliver a message to Attila the Hun asking for his support. She is the daughter of a Roman senator and is very knowledgeable in politics but she becomes a hostage.

The love they share is fraught with danger as there are many enemies of both the lovers. An Egyptian slave who is determined to see that Garic and Arria are killed, an ambitious Tribune who looks for power are among the enemies that Garic and Arria have. During this time when the Roman Empire is on the edge of collapse and Aetius's power grows Garic and Arria must do whatever it takes to protect their love and to see that they and their friends and family are safe from political intrigue and death.

Years ago I was fascinated with stories of Rome during this timeframe, just the civilization and its culture that has a lot of influence in our own society today. This novel takes the reader into a time that was dangerous with political intrigue and danger from outside invaders such as Attila the Hun. The author's research brings to life a long distant time, the story is exciting from the beginning, on the battlefield where Arria finds her husband dying to the ending that could lead to another novel. At least, I hope so because it would be fun to see more of the characters and how their lives progressed.

I really liked this novel and give it 5 stars!

I received a copy of this book for review and for my honest thoughts.

Set in a time of turmoil and war, Edge of Sunrise is a wonderful story about two people who come from very different backgrounds, but who find love in spite of the obstacles that surround them.

Arria, the daughter of a Roman Senator and envoy, is saved from being abducted by men almost as fierce looking as the barbarian that had taken her from her camp. She finds herself strangely attracted to the "long hair" that introduces himself as Garic and struggles to maintain her composure as he delivers her safely to the Assembly of Warriors.

Garic, a Frank, is mesmerized by Arria and ignores warnings that she is betrothed to a Roman Senior Tribune. He follows his heart, and soon he and Arria find themselves caught in the middle of the struggle between the Romans, Franks and Attila the Hun.

There are other characters that feed the underlying subterfuge, which at times I found took me out of Arria and Garic’s story a bit too much by changing the point of view. I would have rather had more time spent on their story and the development of their love, and less on the stories of the characters that interacted with them. My personal preference certainly doesn’t take away from the fact that the story was engaging and one that I would recommend to anyone interested in historical romance set in A.D. 450.

Wow! What a thrilling book. Between the romance, adventure, and battle scenes it is hard to put down! I really appreciated how much depth she gave to characters and it made you want to learn more and more about them. The heroine is a strong female character that you'll be rooting for the entire book. And the villains in the book will make you mad! You'll be flipping pages to find out what happens to them in the end!

I don't typically read historical romance novels, but I found this book to be extremely intriguing and I really enjoyed learning about the history. You can tell Cynthia did her research writing this book! The historical detail is incredible. And the romance in the book was the perfect amount! I look forward to next the books!

Copy Received from Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours for an honest review
When I started "On the Edge of Sunrise" by Cynthia Ripley Miller I was instantly engrossed in the story and captivated by the characters. Arria was a worthy heroine and one that I liked instantly and was interested to see how her story would progress. First, Arria was a great heroine. I loved her courage and strength when she had to come face to face with the difficult choices ahead of her. Garic was her equal as a hero. He was a perfect match and at times adversary for Arria. The time period was intriguing. The historical time period of the Huns and at the same time the conflicts with the church sparked a great backdrop to the already existing tension between Arria and Garic. Miller's pacing of the story was fantastic, she transitioned with ease and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next, how the heroes would come together. I definitely had book hangover after reading this story but luckily it is the first in series. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series and highly recommend this story of love and adventure.
