Over the years I have gone thru the 33 1/3 era, buying many different turntables & cartridges, looking for the perfect comgination for that just right sound. Then came Audio Cassettes, then Mini-Discs, then CDs, now MP3s, each getting better & better. Of coarse my bank account got smaller and smaller as I insisted on having the best quality I could afford. I always updated my entire sound system so it kept up with the new technology. Not the most expensive but good enough. I ran a small Mobile DJ business for 15 years back in the 80's I carried about 500 lbs of the biggest and baddest sound system I could get. My client reviews always came out with high marks cause the sound system kicked ass.
What does all this babble have to do with these speakers that I have never heard of in my life? Well.... THEY KICK ASS!!!
I was setting up an exersise gym in my livingroom (Wierd?) and wanted some self powered bookshelf speakers to listen to a few tunes while I used the new Nautilus Treadmill. I came across the Edifiers R1280T's and started reading the reviews and was slightly dissapointed with some of the negative reviews. BUT.... there were plenty of satisfied customers to convince me to order them.
I set them up on a piece of furniture with my 32" Visio TV & trusty Tivo. I plugged in a few wires & cables turned on the TV, pulled up the concert on the Tivo of John Fogerty: The Long Road Home and it starts off with "Playing in a Traveling Band" I cranked those speakers up so loud I thought they were going to melt. The bass notes were clean and solid. the specs on these speakers say 75 to 18k frequency response but It sounds like a much bigger range than that. The vocals are clear, the guitar breaks will give you chills. The audience cheering makes you think you are there. It almost makes me want to smoke some of that wacky stuff. When finished I logged on to Pandora music streaming to the "New Age Piano Solo" channel and lowered the volume down to a whisper. Beautiful, Beautiful clean full music!!
These Edifiers are the best bookshelf size speakers I have ever owned!! I am really impressed. I wish everyone could come over to my house and I'll put on a thrilling rock party for you. (even at 70 I still get the itch for a party) Next test, I'm gonna plug in my Samsung Galaxy S7e and crank it up on a song by Golden Earring: "Radar Love" and let it work it's way thru the other 1000+ songs. It works great on Smart Phones Tablets & Laptops.
I am very pleased with these speakers. I wish you could hear what I hear. You can!! GO BUY YOUR OWN. PLAY IT LOUD and ENJOY!
Hope this helped.
Let me start by saying that I purchased these as a hold over until I could justify tube amps and quality passive bookshelf speakers (Okay, I really mean wives approval) but these make me question even going down that road.
I was pleasantly surprised by the faithful sound reproduction, I mean I really wasn't expecting such full and rich sound from a $99 pair of speakers. I was so happy with them that I thought to myself that if the smaller R1280T is this good, what does the R1700BT sound like? Short answer... about the same but brighter. Yes it may reproduce lows better at lower volumes but I assure you that at 50-100% power it's hardly a noticeable difference and I prefer the warmer natural tweeter in the R1280T over it's more expensive big brother. I personally will be sending the R1700BT's back because the set I received is having some issues with the power switch. The R1700BT does have bluetooth and that alone can justify the additional cost, but you are also getting a larger amp as well making it a solid purchase. The looks of the R1700BT are modern compared to that of the R1280T being retro in my opinion. The R1700BT Edifier R1700BT Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers - Active Near-field Studio Monitors - Powered Speakers 2.0 Setup Wooden Enclosure - 66w RMS is a great speaker with bluetooth, more power and a great price. But for me it was not the softer more natural sounding performer that the R1280T is.
I did test these on my TV as well... Let me tell you that if you have a sound bar like I do (or should I say did), you have no idea of what you are missing. The money I spent on sound bars looking for the cleanest and easiest way to improve TV sound, I could have that tube amp set up a couple times over. However; it is kind of a pain since your TV remote cannot be programed to control the speakers, but if your TV has variable audio out you are golden! I like them so much I'll be ordering another set of these (R1280T's) for my TV.
I took some photos of the two side by side as there is really not much difference in size. The R1700BT was basically the same height and width but with a sloped front that brings the base out a bit further. IMO, unnecessarily extending the depth.
Either speaker is a winner in my opinion!
Set up: U-turn Orbit Special Turntable w/built-in preamp and these Edifier R1280T Powered speakers... End of set up, and I love it!
Top international reviews
the clarity. Unfortunately the bose and norge combination is harsh on the treble and over emphasizes the bass. I am also amazed at the consistency of the frequencies both at low and high volumes. Even at full volumes the bass is tight and treble is crystal clear. What hooked me to these speakers was the ability to throw out spatial sound. I use them as a stereo pair and am amazed at their sound stage and presence in my 12x15 ft room. I use logitech bt adapater on one of the RC plugs and have the other for my radio. The pc is hooked via bt to the logitech. There is no need of any switches to switch the inputs. One can play both sources simultaneously. If you are looking for a near field speaker with emphasis on clarity then these suit this need pretty well. You will be amazed at the way these small speakers produce such clear notes which are in the range of around 80% to the notes from speakers around 3-5 times the price of these. That is why these are compared with some of the best bookshelf speakers, although not really in their range. These can pretty well be used for a small home party too as they can get just that loud too. The remote is quiet handy if you use them as TV speakers and sit away from them. The only cons are not related to the sound but the smell these emanate out of the box, the radio interference they have on my radio fm reception, but with an external antenna the problem is solved.
If you are confused and ask my opinion between these and the 1700s I will suggest go for the 1280 due to their very high sound to price index.
Edit on 4-june-2019- they work fine even today. However I am not sure if it is my ears or what but they sound harsh as they reproduce notes clearly and at near field my ears ache please note.
Doesnt sound like 42 watt speakers sounds more like 15 watts.
First 10 seconds of any sound track sounds crisp and clear however as soon as all the instruments and vocals start the volume suddenly dips and clarity it lost, the sound quality becomes a little muddy.
At full volume it sounds more like a 20 watt speaker system.
II was hoping for some quality music experience and my expectations were high as this speaker system has very positive reviews on youtube and various websites however it turned out to be a disappointment.
God knows why all these positive reviews, maybe I received a defective one.
For bass heads. You're going to be very happy, as I am. In fact I had to turn the bass down. It's got Bass & Treble control knobs and for volume you can use the remote that comes with it.
These are good for casual listening and aren't bad for production. But by no means are these for professionals that will use them for mixing.
Downside: The Volume knob isn't going to tell you the level because it's digital. What I did was keep it at max and control the input volume. So it's a small con.
Overall I give them, 9/10. They're compact. They sound good. They're nice and bass heavy.
Easy to install and well priced.
The powered, dual speaker system includes dual RCA inputs to allow for multiple devices (a real coup for a system at this price), as well as a wireless remote that allows users to adjust the volume and mute the sound. If you like to have some control over your audio, the R1280T delivers on that front, as well. The system includes bass and treble dials (along with the volume dial) on the active speaker, which provides a good bit of flexibility depending on what you’re listening to, and how you’d like it to sound.
For a system that sets you back less than $100, it sounds like something worth a good bit more than that. Not like what you could get for a few hundred bucks, obviously, but at the top of the game in its price range. The bass is rich and punchy, the highs are lows are clear, and it pumps out more than enough crystal clear sound to rock out in your living room or office. I tested the speakers hooked up to a few different turntables, and it kept the tunes rolling. If you’re looking for a speaker set-up to build an entry-level or mid-tier audio system around, this one is pretty much the best option I’ve run across. The system isn’t huge, but it pipes out some volume for something so small. It’s obviously not what you need when it’s time to light up a house party, but it’ll do the trick for pretty much any of your household jams. If your space is limited, or you’re just looking for something small, save yourself some time and buy these speakers.
Personally, I found that removing the covers made the sound a little clearer in my testing. So that, I definitely prefer the brighter sound produced without the fabric covers.
Something to note. There is no switch for the two audio inputs. This means that if you have both sources playing, both will be heard concurrently. It's essentially and auto-mixer. This feature was an absolute bonus for my parent's setup because it required no additional steps to get the audio to play from either source. The only thing they need to remember is to mute the unwanted source when listening to the other. I feel this is an improvement in the user experience by eliminating the need to access yet another remote control when switching from audio sources (even though this does come with a remote for volume and muting). Since the sound sources are quiet enough, I have the volume of the speakers near maximum and simply use the internal volume controls of the TV and computer to regulate the volume. Just a heads up. If you want to use this with your TV you will need to make sure you TV has an analog audio out. Many new TVs don't have analog outputs anymore which means you'd need to purchase an optical to analog converter to use these speakers, if your intention is to use these for a TV. Overall, I'm super satisfied with these. They sound great.
Remote Control: Works only if you point it directly towards the left speaker. It doesn't respond in all directions unlike some other remotes like that of Tatasky.
Is it value for money?: I really don't know. But, given the so many great online reviews, it could be. Something better than these speakers would actually cost a lot more.
Return policy: Even though Amazon says, it is returnable, it is not. It can only be returned in case, you received a defective/ damaged product. This does not make sense, as one would ask for replacement in that case. One would like to return only if he is not satisfied with the sound quality. There is no other reason possible. This is why, this product is actually NOT returnable. So, if you are buying, make sure, that you know how it sounds, or be prepared to accept it, however it sounds. If you can buy offline, please do, because, in that case, you can listen in person, before purchasing. I had inquired from both the sellers Edifier online retailer, as well as ProAudioHome. Both agreed, that I can return speakers on this basis, but, Amazon denied my return request.
Edit: Review after 20 days:
If you use equalizer in your laptop/phone/audio device and turn down base by 3dB for all frequencies below 240Hz, this speaker sounds crystal clear. All the muddy base is gone. You can keep the knobs for bass and treble on the speaker in the middle. No need to change that.
If you however need a pair of speakers for some really good quality audio and for occasional movies to replace those flat TV speakers these are a great choice. You won’t go wrong just don’t expect fireworks.
