I purchased these speakers for my daughter for Christmas, after having the opportunity to listen to them in an audio store. Let's cut to the chase; how do they sound compared to the Bose Soundlink Mini (I also bought one of these for a Christmas present, so have direct side by side comparison).
Sound quality is without a doubt much, much better with the Edifier speakers over the Bose Soundlink Mini. Every aspect of the sound performance is better: better bass, better midrange, better treble and of course, since these speakers can be separated, much, much better sound separation and stereo performance.
Connectivity via bluetooth: there has been no appreciable difference between these speakers and the Bose. Both connect easily, stay connected well (though I sense that the Bose looses or drops-out a bit more than it should, but usually for just a second or two). So to me, this is a tie.
Portability: The Edifiers in my opinion are not really a portable bluetooth speaker. They are connected to each other by a wire. They need to be plugged in to the wall (energy source) and while one could take them to a friends house or different room in your house, it is not a simple task of simply picking them up, moving them, plopping them down and listening to music. But let's say you are going to a cabin for a week trip, taking these would be worthwhile. The Bose on the otherhand is a truly portable speaker. When charged it does not need a power source and continues to perform for several hours. It can be taken outside, to a park, a cook-out, the pool or beach, etc. . . For portability the Bose definitely wins.
Overall, if sound quality and performance is what is most important to you, these speakers perform well above their selling price and well above the Bose Soundlink Mini - by a wide margin. If portability is more important, find other speakers as I would not call these truly and easily portable.
4 Stars based on comparison of other BlueTooth speakers. FWIW, I have never heard a bluetooth speaker I would rate as 5 stars.
Reference: I am what many would consider an audiofile. All my digital music is full resolution (no MP3 or MP4 truncated files). I own several different audio systems, from solid state class A amplifiers (Krell and Mark Levinson) to tubed (BAT, AR). I run DACs for all my digital music and often upsample (Esoteric, Wadia, DCS, etc.). My preferred speaker brand is Wilson Audio (have owned 5 pair of their speakers) and Thiel. I run only balanced systems and use almost exclusively "Transparent Ultra" cables and Transparent Reference (for digital).
*Stylish - check
* bluetooh - check
* left and right speakers - check
* quality sound - check
* about $150 - almost (but I got it used via amazon for $150)
I originally bought the portable bluetooth Bose Soundlink and was disappointed (They aren't even worth $129 for portable bluetooth speakers. I'd probably get a UE speaker). I realized I didn't want some portable bluetooth gimmicky speaker, regardless of brand. Those things are for people who want to bring them places and just play loud mediocre music. I wanted to use these as speakers for my office desk and I didn't want to buy a sub - too many wires, layers, etc, otherwise, sure just buy a 2.1 logitech, blah blah.
These are great! They have a good weight to them and I love the RED color I bought. I wasn't thinking of style before but it made me give this another look. At 77 watts, it can get pretty dang loud and I'm bummed I can't crank them higher because I share my space. I used them briefly at home and they got loud.
What I love about them isn't just the style or even the bluetooth (I love them both) but that the quality of sound matches the price. There's an amazing clarity not found in many speakers in this range. For sure you don't get this clarity in the more packaged 2.1 computer speakers even with sub. Also I do love the bass and it's enough for me. It won't make your desk/house shake - for sure you need a sub for that. But it produces a clear sound with that bumpin' punchy tight bass. You don't get that on non-sub speakers.
Pull the trigger and buy it.
One thing I will note - they are bigger than you are probably imagining. If you're thinking pods you can basically fit in your hand, think again. They fit fine on my desk and I knew they were supposed to be big based on specs, but boy was I shocked when the box was delivered.
Still, fantastic, beautiful speakers and if you have some space on your desk well worth it.
