When working on amanuscript, editors mark up and revise sections to show writing clients what'snot working, why, and how these passages might be rewritten. We believe this isthe best way to help writers identify their specific weaknesses, as well aslearn how to get mastery over them.

This book is good for intermediate-level authors who want some insight into how to tune their prose; they should know enough to so separate the wheat from the chaff. Experienced authors will likely find little that they don't already know, and novice authors may find value provided they're not led astray by the monochromatic brush the editors use to paint "good" prose on the authorial canvas.
The exercises are right there in the book. No excuses not to do them.
It’s good to have five different editors’ voices. I think that lends credibility to the advice they give.
The before and after examples tend to sound alike from chapter to chapter. They lean YA. I would have liked a wider variety of writing styles. I took half a star off. Still, it’s a minor complaint in a super helpful writing book.
Helpful, actionable, and well worth the purchase. 4.5 stars.
One of my favorite books on fiction writing.
I'm not one to take notes, but I took quite a few while reading this book. And in case you're wondering if reading 12 Fatal Flaws is a tedious task, let me assure you, far from it. It was a joy to read. Giving clear Before and After examples is an especially helpful method for those of us who need to see the difference in order to understand the difference.
Showing the examples of when it's done wrong and when it's done right, was exactly what I needed. I have struggled for years to understand why my writing stays very much on the page----no leaping off it whatsoever.
Practicing the techniques in this book was not only fun, it has completely changed the way I approach my writing! I am definitely going to read every other book in The Writer's Toolbox Series.

These women who want to teach you how to edit don't even write that well themselves.
And the whole book is typeset flush-left instead of justified, making it harder to read.
There are some good examples of waffle (in original scripts) cut down to make it more readable, and the key lesson seems to be the Hemingway theme: make every word work, or get rid of it.
But as a book -- not a cheap one at that -- I wouldn't recommend "12 Fatal Flaws".
