Product Description

Size: 36" Width x 60" Height x 18" Depth

This Edsal UR-364BLK shelving unit has a frame made of steel for strength, four adjustable shelves, a 3,200 lb. capacity when the weight is evenly distributed across all shelves, and a black baked enamel finish for resistance to corrosion. It is suitable for organizing and storing items. The shelves are made of particle board supported by double-riveted beams and braces for strength, and adjust in 1-1/2" increments to accommodate items of varying heights.

The posts on this shelving unit have a two-piece design so it can be assembled vertically to create one 60 x 36 x 18 inch (H x W x D) unit, or assembled horizontally to create two 30 x 36 x 18 inch (H x W x D) units with two shelves each. (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) This shelving unit's rivet lock design requires no nuts or bolts for assembly. Assembly instructions are included, tools for assembly are not included.

I bought 2 of these units from Home Depot for my garage.

Pros:

1. Super easy to set-up (requires a rubber mallet but nothing else). One person assembly, took all of 15 minutes from start to finish. A 12 y/o could put these together no problem.

2. Incredibly stable w/ a rated weight limit of 4,000 lbs overall. (Other units really don't compare as they can only support 50 - 150lbs on average per shelf).

3. They easily hold 12 and/or 13 gallon storage bins between the shelves and they are adjustable for larger items.

4. Can be used as a workbench instead. The shelves can be split into two sections and placed side by side (2 shelves on one, 3 on the other)... using the top shelves as a workbench space. So basically you don't have to make it 72" tall, each can be 36" tall instead.

5. Can be drilled into studs for safety and support. No need to make a hole, just use the ones already created for the shelving. Recommend 1 3/4" screws with flat washers or anchor/screw kits that can support the weight.

6. They look really good!

Cons:

1. Price - I bought these for $66- from Home Depot (everyday price, not on sale). However, if you don't live near a local store I would still say these are worth the higher price as they are far superior than other shelving units out there.

2. Plastic feet provided, but they don't have levelers. The little feet are good for not scratching up the concrete/flooring, but they would be better if they leveled out the unit. I didn't see this as a huge problem though. I placed some cardboard under the one corner and managed to make it pretty stable.

The couplers shown in the photograph are NOT the ones that ship with the product. They instead ship couplers that go along the inside of the beam, as shown in the below picture.

Aside from simply being different than pictured, these couplers are, as others have mentioned, absolutely horrible, horrible, horrible. Good luck getting the two beams to align straight. The couplers hang about a half inch off from the beams and seem like they might pop out under stress. I would be afraid to put anything heavy on the top two shelves.

Also, the attaching piece of one of the beams was bent and would therefore not attach. I had to use a wrench to bend it back to a semi-usable position.

This product is utter crap. Buyer beware.

Anyone who purchases this product needs to be aware of the Safety Instructions accompanying the assembly instructions. Specifically: "This unit should be securely anchored to a wall or floor with suitable fasteners, which are not included."
This is not a stand alone unit. If you put it together without tying the shelves into the wall, you are making a big mistake that could result in property loss and / or personal injury. I don't know what fasteners would secure the shelves to the floor in any meaningful way. That's kind of ridiculous but the shelves MUST be secured to the wall and to studs in the wall, not just to the drywall or plaster. Minimally, they need to be attached at the top of the shelves and below the third shelf where the "C-Posts are joined together.
The "C-Posts" are joined together only by the rivets on the "beams" and "braces." The beams and braces are the shelf supports. Both of those terms sound deceptively stable. The posts ought to be joined with a flitch plate or a splicer that is independent of the supports. That would go a long way toward making this unit more stable. It would have made me more confident in the outcome, anyway.
The shelves are made of particle board material that is about half an inch thick. You might get good service out of them if the shelves are installed in a low-humidity, temperature controlled space. In my case, I have installed this unit in a machine storage shed that has a dirt floor and galvanized steel walls. Moisture is a deadly enemy of particle board. I coated mine with Thompson's Water Seal and I think they should be fine, for several years, but I'm also planning on replacing them with 5/8 inch CDX plywood.

I bought this product for some shed storage. I needed space for my heavy tools and construction supplies. It does indeed assemble in minutes as advertised, no fuss, but the shelves were just thin particle board, covered in a waterproof composite. Still, the box and description said it was rated to 4000lbs. I had the lower unit in place (it can be assembles vertically and horizontally) and placed two 5-gallon buckets of plaster on the lowest shelf on one side. Each weigh about 40-50 pounds, and instantaneously the shelf began sagging under the weight. I came back a few minutes later with two more buckets and the lower shelf was already cracked! Unreal. How on earth is this thing supposed to handle 4000 lbs?! It's a joke. I was expecting to put four of five five gallon buckets on the bottom shelf but it cracked with just two. Waste of time and money. If the shelves were plywood or you only had light stuff, it might hold up, but I don't see they can make the claim that this holds 4000lbs.
