These type of devices get a lot of criticism sometimes, but I think most of that comes from people who had a cheap knockoff and haven't used the real thing.
I've been impressed how well this thing can work. I still have trouble with lead free solder on multi-layer boards, but I think that's because I'm not getting the solder liquid enough. When I am able to get everything fully liquified, this thing will suck the solder straight out. The DS017LS generates a lot of suction, and I think it's size must be key to how strongly it sucks. I would avoid buying any of the smaller knockoff products, and stick with the real deal.

The handle is a good design. To cock the handle, you push the whole thing down on your desk. You can do this with one hand. The handle is safe, because once it is cocked, the handle will return to it's original position. When you fire the trigger, the handle does not need to move - it is already in it's resting position so it will *not* fly out and hit anything.

The nozzle is very heat resistant. I haven't had any problems with that. The parts for these units are also replaceable, but I haven't needed to replace anything yet.

Before buying this, I was trying to use a silly Radio Shack iron with a tiny little red bulb on it. I couldn't do anything with that. This thing is orders of magnitude more powerful in suction and works so much better.
If you're shopping for a soldapullt, get the real thing. Go big or go home. They aren't that expensive - so don't waste your money on an undersized knockoff, then just end up wishing you had a better one.

I may still buy a vacuum desoldering station someday, but good ones are expensive. In the meantime, I'm using this. I think it's probably the best desoldering tool you can find at such a moderate cost. There are even some professionals who prefer a Soldapullt over the desoldering stations.

I was a little tentative with this at first as I was afraid the soldering iron would melt the plastic tip. Using a controlled temp soldering iron at 750 degrees, this has been a non-issue. The correct way to use this is to press it right down over this solder joint as you heat it with the soldering iron and as soon as the solder melts, press the trigger. It completely removes the old solder from my double sided PCB boards and leaves the lead hole wide open. An indispensable product for anyone doing detailed component installation on PCB boards.

For the past year I've been using the generic $9 "blue" solder gun thing purchased from Radio Shack. While it did the job, it wasn't very powerful and had a small hole for sucking/removing solder.

The Edsyn Deluxe is incredible. It arrived in the mail a few days ago. I just started using it to completely rebuild a PCB on a 1960s Wurlitzer combo organ and it's wonderful. The vacuum is stronger than I could have imagined and the hole for sucking the solder is twice as large as the generic Radio Shack item, making the job twice as fast (or faster).

You don't even need a complete seal on the pad to remove all of the solder. While the Radio Shack gun took a few turns to remove solder from a pad, the Edsyn does it all in one push of the button.

It's definitely worth the extra money. I'd purchase this again if I ever lost it and would recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade to professional-quality tools.

Solid construction, did the job well

I purchased the Soldapullt after a 2.5 hour job desoldering. I consulted the reviews on Amazon and settled on paying more for this product. I'm glad I did. The same job that took me 2.5 hours without the Soldapullt, literally took me less than 10 minutes with it. An excellent product that is clearly designed to keep a solid vacuum and pull a lot of suction.

Note that unlike the old ones, you can not lock the plunger in-this can make this tool tough to put in the tool box.
