Education and Modernization combines historical perspectives on Chinese education with a thematic analysis of a range of contemporary issues. China is a particularly interesting case to consider in relation to the many questions concerning the links
between education and modernization. Since 1911 its leaders have experimented broadly with at least two distinct forms of Western modernity, capitalist and socialist, as well as a wide range of culturally distinct educational patterns introduced from
the West. In addition China has its own highly developed cultural and educational patterns which have had considerable influence throughout Southeast Asia. The essays included here take the reader from Confucius to beyond the Cultural Revolution, through current systems of formal and non-formal education, to a consideration of a range of issues in education and modernization including teachers and teaching, women and education, and management training.
