Top customer reviews
The concept is simple: use the Ollie "pen" to choose the correct answer on each card. When you tap Ollie on the dot of the correct answer, you get positive feedback with green lights, when it's an incorrect answer, you get an "oh sorry" (or something similar) with red lights. We love that you can adjust the volume of the Ollie pen and you can choose to hear only musical feedback.
I have a Kindergartener and a second grader who I have used these with. My second grader, of course, was able to do most of these on his own. He especially liked the science and the reading comprehension cards. I was able to give him the cards and Ollie, and he used them as a self-directed activity, checking along the way.
My Kindergartener needed much more help, of course. She needed directions read to her, as well as the bigger sentences. On some of the sets of cards, once I read her a few, she was able to do the rest on her own and gradually built up her own fluency so she could just go with it.
No, Ollie does not read anything to you...he only provides the appropriate feedback to your answers. If you want something that does it all for you, there are many apps out there. I think this set is great the way it is. It allows the parent (or teacher) to scaffold to a certain point, and then the kids can run with it once they increase their learning. I was definitely NOT looking for something that did it all for me - so this set was perfect!
Both of my kids really enjoyed this set. I can't wait to see what else is offered with Hot Dots! I also plan to use these in my classroom in the fall as well as with some of the kids I tutor.
