We set this up for our 8 year old. There's no way he could have set this up himself. I suppose a 5th grader or older could. Once set up, it was easy to understand and appreciate the free, clean, limitless power of the sun. He can easily adjust the solar panel to face the sun for best power capture. Overall a nice, educational toy, though once set up, I wonder if I am more impressed with the toy then the amount of fun my child gets from it. Makes a nice gift - a little different and more educational than all the toys stacked in the basement until you need to toss them. Can't give it 5 stars since it's too complex for a child <11 or so to set up. That means no fun until Dad has a minute to assemble it.

I fully expected that there would be one solar panel that you would need to plug into various devices, so that didn't upset me.

However, what did upset me is that this toy is tiny. The solar panel is about the size of a solar panel on a calculator. You need to assemble everything including the gearbox of the motor. The instructions are a single sheet of paper and have obviously been greatly reduced in size to the point that they are hardly readable. The components are so tiny that they are really difficult to assemble. The plastic is really cheap, and it is difficult to snap pieces together. I couldn't get the ends on the tiny shaft to stay. I just gave up, this toy is complete junk. Don't purchase!

When we received the order and open the package, the solar panel was scratched, and the coils were rusted. The plastic was cheaply made, which scared me that I may break it when assembled. The pieces keep falling off when we try to put it together. We were unable to get it to work and is still working on trying to. Updating the review if we are able to get it to work.

STAY AWAY!!!!

This product has been marketed here on Amazon and other websites under different manufacturer names, but it's the same, horrible product. Parts come in as two sheets of flimsy plastic in a manilla envelope. Pieces broke while detaching them, rendering the kit useless. Even the solar cell refused to charge.

Christmas disappointment.

Waste of money.

NO response from the manufacturer to our request to replace/refund in OVER A YEAR!

It's an overseas company with a shipping address in Texas. They got the money, they don't care. They know on one;s going to sue them over $10.

The picture on the item shown is misleading in a way. There is only ONE solar panel for power from the sun (or strong light source). It comes with six different shapes of toys. Only ONE set of solar panel. There are NOT 3 or 6 solar panels as it appears on the ADs. The plastic parts look like a $1 toy. The instruction sheets had been shrunk to a 11 x 17 inches sheet of paper on both sides. 18 pages of directions with picture drawings to show how to put parts together. I had to use scanner to enlarge each page to read the words and look into the drawings. Of course after HOURS of studying and trying, the final product is fun to play. I have to unplug the solar panel from one shape and then re-attach it to another in order to have 1 of 6 toys setup. It is amazing to see the power of the little tiny motor. Have to be very careful in handling the wires for connections. I broke one but I managed to fix it, so it works

after spending hours trying to assemble it with magnifying glass to read the tiny fonts and pictures of the instruction, I finally gave up. the parts are so flimsy I doubt they will ever work. Bottom line: do not buy it. It is a joke.

"What a low price.." I said. "I want my daughter to learn about solar power" I said. I bought it from Target or someplace, instead of reading reviews here. THIS PRODUCT IS LANDFILL MATERIAL. You may as well flush your $8, or buy yourself a drink, you'll need it if you actually try to deal with this incredibly cheap, shoddy, flimsy piece of plastic trash. Here's how it will go: your child looks excited, then disappointed when they open the box, then annoyed as you try to help assemble what looks like pieces of trash, then mildly bored as you curse under your breath. By the time you've broken a few pieces 5 minutes in, your child is at least apathetic.
The company will get your money, overseas, they don't care if it disappoints you and your kid, what are you going to do, sue them? I wonder how many of these are in our landfills... hundreds? Thousands? If I took the time to warn you here, trust me, stay away from this situation.

Motor broke within seconds of removing it from packaging leaving remain pieces useless. We had expected at the very least to be able to unpackaged the toy before it was broken but that was not the case. My son was very disappointed.
