These fabulous Edwin Jagger shaving brushes are created in Sheffield, England combining cutting edge technology and traditional craftsman skills and using selected polyester material for the brush body. All are hand filled with excellent quality best badger hair. Best badger hair is an excellent quality brush for those wet shavers who use a hard shaving soap, prefer a rather firmer sensation during lathering or those with coarser beard hair; badger hair is chosen because the ability of the individual hairs to absorb hot water during the shave will ensure a very effective lathering performance for your daily shave with either shaving cream or shaving soap. Each comes packaged with a matching plastic drip stand as we always recommend that, after daily use, shaving brushes are thoroughly rinsed in warm water and hung to dry. Great mid range brush

I've had 4 brushes now and have been wet shaving for 8 years. I was concerned that this was going to be too small in my hand or too light as I had a Parker before that was significantly heavy and had a nice sized bulb on it.

This is lighter than that, but not too light. It is smaller than others I've had but not too light. The bristles are a bit stiffer than others that I've had, but I've realised that the stiffer bristles are much better for shaving soap that I use, where the softer bristles are better for the shaving cream that I used when I first started wet shaving.

Overall, great brush. A bit of advice, when shopping for brushes, don't get caught up in all the different levels of badger hair. These are marketing people at work, and while you can tell a slight difference, softer bristles aren't always better. Rather consider - do you use soap (stiffer is better) or cream (softer is better)? Do you have a more sensitive face (softer might be better) or do you enjoy the exfoliation to keep your face soft (stiffer is better). How many passes do you take - if you only take 2 or 3, you don't need a TON of all that water holding capability that people rave about, but if you are taking 5 or more passes, that might be better for you and a bigger bulb and softer bristles might be better for you.

Fantastic brush!

I've been using this brush now for about six months and it is just simply a flat out great product. It is soft enough to face lather with, holds just the right amount of water and has enough backbone to tackle anything you throw at it.

This was my first badger brush purchase, but since then I've acquired multiple Shavemac silvertips and a handful of more expensive brushes. After thorough experimentation, this is still my favorite brush. While not quite as soft as the silvertips, it's size and density are perfect. With a few of the larger silvertips I have to use a significant amount of product and the results aren't that much different. After a generous three pass shave there's still plenty of lather in this baby and it has just enough splay to really massage your face but not lose lather integrity.

So, I've since sold all but one silvertip.....and my trusty EJ is my goto brush. You can spend more money, but this is just simply a wonderful product that is perfect right out of the box.

Great brush, but nasty smell initially

Great brush if it weren't for this native badger rotten smell. I think it goes away if you wash it with your soap/cream a few times. But wow does it stink. However, it does prove that it is indeed legit badger hair. So there we go. Definitely better than pure badger. Lathers my soap fine, it is indeed abrasive enough to do so. However, it is soft enough to not have the same cheap bite that pure badger gives. Probably my favorite brush type.

In regards to the stand, there is a small adhesive sticker on the back. The ones who complain are the ones who aren't using the adhesive to stick onto their mirror or whatever. Because if you do not, the stand itself is very lightweight and will fall when you attempt to grab it or whatever due to the base not being weighted (and why should it if it's intent is to be adhered to a wall/mirror?). Although they could have easily have put the sticker on the bottom -shrugs-. It fits nicely to this brush, not tight at all like some reviewers have said. I was worried about the gap from the bottom to the brush hanging but there is indeed a big enough of 1 in gap or so.

Edit: Been using this brush for about 2.5 years now and mine still looks brand new. When I first used it there was a strong scent that went away after just a couple uses. Also maybe 10 to 15 hairs came out in the first couple months that I noticed. Once those loose ones came out, I never again lost another hair from it that I noticed. I don't baby it (I really swirl it around to get a fast lather) and it has held up great. Although I am not careful about how I lather it in the dish and on my face, one thing I do do is rinse it and very carefully wring it out after use every time. That said, I have a friend with the same brush and his started shedding hairs very badly (to the point of being in my opinion unusable) after a year and a half or so... he bought his a year or so before I did though so maybe it was a bad run... but like I said mine has been working great. Honestly I wouldn't buy it again, but only because I want one that is slightly bigger because I like a very wet/thin lather. It does it's job well but a larger one would hold slightly more water for the lather that I prefer. I know many people who like a thicker lather than I do though. The feel is very soft, the bristles do not poke. I would also probably like to get a slightly less luxurious one next time so I can build lather a little faster (my face is not sensitive so it could take a firmer bristle). I recently compared it to the brush my grandfather has used since well before I was born. His, by comparison, felt like sandpaper was nowhere near as good at this one.

This is not related to the review but (just trying to help out) if you're just getting into old timey shaving and not sure what you want to do, might I suggest Edwin jagger De89lbl razer and derby 200 pack (usually around 15 bucks). There are cheaper razers if you're on a budget but it is nice and pretty and should last a lifetime if cared for... there are very few blades cheaper than the derby though. I tried just about every blade and I liked the derby's as much as the more expensive feathers and such and the 200 pack will last you a couple years. Also I started out with proraso sensitive shave soap which is very minimal and non irritating but eventually switched to dr harris lavendar which lathers just awesome and leaves a nice finish on my face, which is great. If you are thinking about straight razers I would suggest giving the DE a try first. Both because daily you will want to DE anyway and just straight when you have time and because the straight has a huge learning curve and costs more to get into.

This shaving brush does feel softer and lather soap somewhat better than my old brush, but unfortunately, it sheds. Not a little, a lot: 8-12 bristles each time I use it, Bristles come off on my face when I am lathering, interfering with the blade. The inside of the Trufitt and Hill soap bowl looks like the floor of a barber shop. It is noticeably less full than when I purchased it several months ago, and obviously will not last as long as my old cheap standard brush. Waste of money.
