Reason for Purchase: I've been having some serious tennis and golfer's elbows (even though I don't golf) for 8 months. Tried to rest as much as possible, even stopped playing piano and sports for 3 straight months of those 6... to no avail. Previously tried compression straps/bands, but felt I wasn't getting enough support and didn't like the thick overlapping velcro that would catch on my shirt when I moved my arm. Seeing so many pro tennis players now using sleeves, I thought I'd try one. After some research, it looked like this Venom sleeve would help me more than the bands and provide me with strong support and not just warmth. Turns out I was right.
Use: I've used it for a variety of strenuous activities as well as typing and light household chores. I've even used it for a couple of hours at night to keep my arm from twisting in my sleep. My arm feels supported and warm during use. Nice compression without too much pressure (no fingers blowing up in size or skin soreness by the end of play).
Today I played 2 hours of Pickleball followed by 1 hour of snow shoveling (wet, heavy, heavy snow, too). I didn't have any pain during or immediately after. Obviously not healed yet... 'cuz really only total rest is going to do that... but I must say my elbow feels way less strained after using this sleeve. Haven't tried tennis yet... going to wait until the snow melts to give my arm some more healing time as tennis is much more arm strenuous and I hit fairly hard (plus I'm sure I'm doing something with wrong my forehand that's not helping the scenario...will fix that in the summer).
Have decided that I will get one of these sleeves for my other arm, which has some sensitivities in the elbow area lately due to a tendon pull/tear in the shoulder about 6 months ago. Yes, how fun the 50s are compared to what you could get away with in your 20s!
Care: Haven't need to wash it until tonight (today was the first time I really sweated in it). Don't anticipate any problems with hand wash/line dry as this material has really held its shape/compression all week long and has not slipped or bunched at all during any activity.
Size: Large was too big on me. I ordered a Large per Venom's instructions/chart for measuring arms. While I have an athletic build, I'm only 5'6" and wear size 10/Medium typically. So, I questioned the chart as my measurements came up clearly in the Large range and I read tons of reviews by some pretty big guys who said they were Larges going by the chart. But then I found others, including females, whose body sizes didn't seem that large who were advising to absolutely follow the instructions and not order up or down a size. So I did and ordered the Large.
When the Large sleeve arrived, I put in on right away. It immediately slipped off easily. Some compression above the elbow, but definitely little to no compression at or below the elbow. I contacted Venom via Amazon asap with a message that I'd need a Medium, but there wasn't any return info provided in the shipment. I got a reply fairly quickly stating that a Medium was already being shipped to me at no cost and I was to just keep the Large. True to their word, my new sleeve arrived in 2 days.
Don't know what to suggest for sizing instructions as arm strength/sizes can't necessarily be predicted clothing size every time. That said, I can't imagine a female my size needing anything bigger than a Medium in this sleeve (again, I'm a very strong, athletic size 10/M, sometimes 12/L depending on cut/brand). Hope this helps.
Overall Yay or Nay?: Really like this sleeve and the Venom customer service. Definitely will recommend this product/brand to my friends. It's a Yay.
I think I would have preferred this to have a very specific form to it, by which I mean the shape so the elbow side has the bend and motion is easier. By being straight I am unsure if one way or another is better and there is a bit of bunching on the inside of my elbow when I bend it. This isn't a major discomfort and, when doing something more strenuous, is barely noticeable. But something relatively simple, such as typing this review, is a bit more uncomfortable because it is being held in a bent position.
All in all, I'm happy with it. As it wears out, I will probably replace it with one that has a bend built into it. This will work great if you're mostly looking for something to use when you're doing physical work or athletic activities.
I have injured the tendon on my left elbow. Previously, it was the right elbow and it took me almost 19 months to fully heal. Without proper support on the joint and immobilizing the injured area, it seems like it's impossible to allow it to heal. Just as you make progress something as innocent as a overly firm handshake from someone unaware of your plight can cause such pain and agony you can't even imagine it, until that happens.
Depending upon the actual area of the injury and the location of the pain, it's often referred to as either "Tennis Elbow" or "Golf Elbow". Obviously, other injuries can happen and other medical conditions exist, so always check with your primary medical care professional and / or specialist to make sure you understand just what is going on and how to best treat it.
This brace helps stabilize the elbow which is important. Depending upon the actual injury or issue you are having, you may need to "compress" the injured muscle area to serve as a point where the pressure is taken off the injury. Make sure you know what you are going with wearing these items.
If you are having pain in the back of your hand when wearing an elbow brace, you maybe wearing it either improperly or possibly it's too small. If the back of your hand swells or seems to be fluid filled, the edema is indicative of something is wrong. Don't ignore it. Check with your medical provider and confirm the best way to help you heal. Circulation is critical and a properly supporting compression sleeve shouldn't be compromising your arms and joints circulation.
Without this type of elbow support and not knowing just what is going on, it can take a year or even longer for the injury to heal on it's own. Some injuries may never heal if not dealt with correctly. I strongly suggest you confirm the injury with your physician and find out what type of brace and style of support is right for you. If you already have the Venom brace and are using it, show your medical professional how you are wearing it and how often.
I found the Venom brace to be very high quality and the material "breathes" which is important. You also have to have it sized right and wear it correctly. It may seem obvious, but I have seen many people wear these backwards.....Yep.
I like that Venom is a small family owned company and that they want to help their clients get the right product and use it correctly to help heal their joint or whatever maybe the issue. Thank you Charles G., Venom Founder and CEO, for checking with me to make sure your brace fit correctly and was helping my injury. I appreciate the offer to exchange it or provide something different to help me achieve the fastest healing.
This is a painful injury and when you grip anything, the shooting pain is unbelievable. Hopefully, with your product, I can get this issue behind me and move on. Thanks for selling a great product and for double checking to make sure your product is working for me the best that it can.
