About the author

I have been interested in the role of nutrition, diet, and behavior since the 1970s when I wrote the first of seven books about hyperactive children. By the late 1980s I started taking courses about nutrition at Purdue University. I decided to earn my Master's degree from the Department of Nutrition Science which I completed in the 1990s. I stayed on to work for my mentor Jay Burgess. We conducted and published 3 studies in the medical literature about essential fatty acids in children and college students with ADHD. More recently, we measured the amounts of artificial food dyes in common beverages and foods that appeal to children and reported our findings in Clinical Pediatrics. Conclusion: lots of foods, beverages and candy are loaded with artificial food dyes! Other studies have shown that some children with ADHD are "turned on" by the dyes. This is just one possible piece in a child's jigsaw puzzle!
Apart from my work at Purdue, I have written 7 books bout diet and behavior. My latest was just published by Charles C Thomas: Solving the Puzzle of Your ADD/ADHD Child: Natural Solutions for Hard-to-Raise Children. If you have a child or grandchild or are a professional dealing with ADHD children, this book is written for you!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2006This easy to read book helped us find a little peace in our lives. We implemented many things from this book with our ADHD son. We have been doing this diet for about three months now. I have never recommended any other ADHD book. This is the first. I am amazed at the difference. These were easy things to implement. The nice thing about this book is you can try one thing at a time or a lot. It is not overwhelming. Some things this book helped my son with are; he's much less hyperactive, sleeps better, eats better, less moody and fewer meltdowns. The stress level in our family is way down. Thank you Laura! My son enjoys the recipes in the book as well. Check out her website too!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2014I met Laura Stevens in the early 1980s when she spoke at West Lafayette Public Library in Indiana. Her children were out of control until she put them on a natural diet. Then she began to study the effects of toxics upon our diet and became a leading worldwide authority. Please add this very important book to your personal library.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2019I got this book as a gift to a friend who is trying to avoid having to use drugs. They have really enjoyed to book.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2011this book has a lot of great information, including diet ideas. and i'm positive this will help my child. and i'm sure it would help your child, even if they dont have add, its a great guide to help with every day living for children and parents
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2022I'm sure this book was helpful when it was published (in 2000), but it needs an update. It is based on earlier knowledge about ADHD, and there should be more helpful, current resources available now.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2018Great resource. I implemented elimination diet, supplements and so me more. In 10 months my child is another completely different person.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2014This is an AMAZING book! It has helped my son tremendously!

TechiMumReviewed in the United Kingdom on September 20, 20175.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read for any parent or teacher managing a child with adhd
Helped me understand my son a little more and how to parent him and avoid distress for him whilst ensuring he grew to a balanced adult. I bought this years ago and the information did help me ensure my son didn't use his ADHD as an excuse for bad behaviour.
CarrieReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 18, 20135.0 out of 5 stars Very useful and not difficult to read.
I was very pleased with this. It gave me a lot of information and was thought-provoking. I would definitely recommend it.
WindwardReviewed in Canada on November 23, 20161.0 out of 5 stars This book is terribly old and out of date!
This book is out of date!! You can get more useful and up to date ideas and information by looking online at NaturalNewsDOTcom and similar websites. The references that are cited in this book are from the 1980's and 90's. So much more recent research is available. Also, the diet suggested in this book is filled with recommendations for GMO containing foods, but there are some good meal ideas for those who have never seen the inside of a kitchen... Please note that the reviews above this one are 10+ years old.

Miss PinkyReviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 20072.0 out of 5 stars ADD - A Double Disappointment
After reading about ADD/ADHD on various websites, I was hoping this book would offer something I didn't already know. Concentration and a strong will is needed to get through the rather long-winded and drawn out chapters. I was constantly skipping pages to get to the actual facts. The recipes are a good idea but some of the American ingredients and terms are baffling - I spent the best part of an hour with a dictionary, a pile of cookery books and a calculator trying to convert cups into grams. Rather disappointing.
