In dem etwas unheimlich anmutenden Haus des Barons vereinsamt die junge, phantasievolle und lebhafte Effi, der es schwerfällt, in ihrer neuen Heimat Anschluß zu finden. Auch die Geburt ihrer Tochter kann sie nicht über ihre innere Vereinsamung hinwegtäuschen. Viel von ihrem Mann alleingelassen, geht Effi, der die Lüge eigentlich zuwider ist, fast gegen ihren Willen eine Liebesbeziehung zu dem neuen Bezirkskommandanten Crampas ein, der sie zuvor lange vergeblich umworben hatte. Diese eher leidenschaftslose Beziehung ist zu Effis Erleichterung beendet, als ihr Mann nach Berlin versetzt wird. Die Zeit in Berlin gestaltet sich harmonisch - bis Innstetten durch Zufall Briefe findet, die Crampas während der Kessiner Zeit an Effi geschrieben hatte.

Th. Fontane wurde am 30.12.1819 in Neuruppin geboren. Er stammte aus einer in Preußen heimisch gewordenen Hugenottenfamilie. Der Vater war Apotheker. Fontane besuchte das Gymnasium Neuruppin (1832) und die Gewerbeschule Berlin (1833). 1836-1840 Apothekerlehre in Berlin. Fontane gab 1849 seinen Apothekerberuf auf; er arbeitete dann mit Unterbrechung bis 1859 als freier Mitarbeiter im Büro eines Ministeriums. Er lebte von 1855-1859 in England als Berichterstatter. Von 1860 bis 1870 arbeitete er als Redakteur der Berliner "Kreuz-Zeitung". 1870-1889 Theaterkritiker bei der "Vossischen Zeitung". 1876 Sekretär der Akademie der Künste Berlin und freier Schriftsteller. 1894 Dr. phil. h.c. A barebones edition unworthy of a great novel

This is a review of the German-language edition of Theodor Fontane’s masterpiece, Effi Briest, published by Hofenberg. It is not a review of the novel.

This edition is a print-on-demand barebones hardcover book. The text is based on that of a scholarly edition published in 1973 but it has none of the benefits of a scholarly edition: no introduction, no explanatory footnotes that are so important to an appreciation of Fontane’s many references to historical events and persons.

The only additional information this edition contains is a five-page chronology of Fontane’s life at the end of the book, which is the sort of information that can easily be found elsewhere and adds nothing to an appreciation of Effi Briest.

In short, I can think of no reason to buy this edition of Effi Briest, rather than a more informative edition that enhances one’s reading experience.

Spotty Translation (Literally!)

I am disappointed in this edition of Efii Briest. The footnotes are quite helpful, but it is an exaggeration to call this a side by side edition as large portions of the text are not translated and so the German text sits on the left side and after a cursory summary of what happens (in just a fewlines) there is blank white space on the right for several pages. While translations of this in English are available, the whole point of this (I thought) is to give people who are working on learning German a comparison text to look at. (If this is a pedagogic decision then atleast if could be explained and defended in some kind of foreward, and then the blank pages could have notes about translation issues and aids to students, but instead the reader is simply confronted with empty pages. The book is a large format, (which is nice), but I can't really recommend it.

A window in time

How does one rate a classic that has already stood the test of time? It sheds an interesting light into the time in Germany before the World War I. I read the German edition because German is my first language. To somebody who speaks German not very competently, this will be difficult to read. Yet, at the same time, I cannot imagine how it could be translated and give justice to the brilliance of the language.

Don't waste your time

Fontane's examination of upper class Germany in the nineteenth century ultimately proves to be a scathing indictment of the "me first" mentality, but, and this is important: NOTHING HAPPENS. For about 200 pages Fontane wastes the readers' time by doing what could be done in about 30 pages: He shows how messed up the whole aristocratic scene was. Yeah, so they commit adultery an lie to each others face, you don't have to drag it out for so damn long. All in all, it makes me feel good to NOT be a rich upper class waster. And once the hammer drops (about 35 pages before the book ends) it still doesn't matter that Fontane has built these characters up: They are all the same exact characters in different bodies. I didn't feel anything for Effi or Instetten or anyone else except Roswitha, and her only because her dad chased her aroudn with a red-hot poker when she was a young girl.

I was a bit disappointed on receiving this book today. While (as far as I know) the complete German text is presented, large chunks - entire chapters - are not translated into the English. Just eyeballing it, I would say that perhaps one-tenth of the German is not translated - sometimes, a summary paragraph is presented in brackets in lieu of a German chapter. The English translation used is by William A. Cooper, but there is no indication of when the translation was done. I haven't started reading the book yet, but the quality of the translation appears adequate. I'm using this bilingual or parallel text edition to help me work through the original German text, and for that, the book is fine - the editor did a good job of aligning the paragraphs. Again, my only complaint is that an incomplete translation was used - presumably, because it was in the public domain and did not require paying royalties.

Ich habe mich selten mit einem Klassiker so schwer getan wie mit Effi Briest. 80% sind einfach nur sterbenslangweilig. Effi ist naiv und langweilig und ihr Leben ungefähr so spannend wie wenn in China ein Sack Reis umfällt. Erst als ihre Affaire auffliegt (die beim Lesen völlig an mir vorbeigegangen ist) wird es interessant und ich habe am Ende sogar richtig mitgelitten, sogar einige Tränen verdrückt. Was hauptsächlich daran liegt, dass eine nun deutlich reifere und mir fast sympathische Effi für Vergehen bestraft wird, die sie vor gefühlten Ewigkeiten begangen hat, weil ihr Ehemann sie die ganze Zeit in einem großen Haus alleine gelassen hat und sie daher fast vor Langeweile umgekommen ist (wie ich beim Lesen).
Ich habe schon viele Klassiker gelesen und kann fast alle weiterempfehlen, dieser gehört eindeutig nicht dazu. Die drei Sterne gebe ich nur wegen des Endes, über das ich noch eine ganze Weile nachgedacht habe. Es ist die Qual durch den Rest des Buches aber nicht wert.

Fontane shows how these conventions can ruin the lives of the individuals in a moving story.
