Morkot is an Egyptologist, and the prose is consequently a bit pedantic, but readable enough except for the chapter on nomes. This chapter occurs near the beginning of the book, and almost caused me to abandon it, but I made it through to discover greener pastures ahead.
Even though it is allegedly geared toward the layman, Morkot fails to define esoteric terms when they first appear (e.g. "theophoric"), only to do so chapters later. He also seems to take it for granted that even a layman would be familiar with certain aspects of ancient Egypt.
I'm left with the sneaking suspicion that if I hadn't just returned from five weeks in Egypt, I would not have finished the book. But, while better books on the subject undoubtedly exist, this one is by no means bad. If one is very interested in ancient Egypt, it might be worthwhile to have a go at it.
