Editorial Reviews
Clint Eastwood directs and stars in The Eiger Sanction, an international action thriller set in the Swiss Alps. Jonathan Hemlock (Eastwood) is a retired professional assassin who has adapted a calmer lifestyle with a pursuit of art collecting. When a close friend is murdered, Hemlock is suddenly forced out of retirement to hunt the deadly double agent that killed his comrade. The search takes him on a breathtaking journey up the Swiss Alps with a team of mountain climbers, one of which is unidentified target. Co-starring George Kennedy, The Eiger Sanction features some of the most exciting mountain climbing sequences ever captured on film.

Directed by Eastwood before he got good at gritty realism. The appeal here is more camp, with its quite dated dialog and soundtrack. Also lots of really crass remarks to women, including joking about rape. Vonetta McGee is riveting though. The best part is the actual climbing sequence toward the end -- mainly for it's classic lines ("We'll make it."... "I don't think so, but we will carry on in style.") The climbing itself is stupendously non-thrilling, although they're supposed to be doing the perilous north face of the Eiger in bad weather. (And after day in a helmet struggling up the rock and ice Clint's dashing doo is as unscathed as if he'd packed a blow dryer.) If (like me) you mainly want to see the climbing part and (like me) keep wondering when they'll ever get to it, you can fast forward to the last 20-30 min. For a much more gripping, well-directed, -written and -acted story about the Eiger, see "North Face" (2010), based on the true story of the 1936 first ascent. For an Alpine mountain movie featuring Clint with better dialog and much more suspense and intrigue, see the WWII classic by Alistair McLean, "Where Eagles Dare" (also starring Richard Burton).

I have this movie on DVD...and having compared the 2 there is basically no difference. What on earth are they pulling here? It just looks like they tried to do a digital "UPSCALE", but ended up with a standard DVD version. This is a COMPLETE rip-off people. ZERO high definition in this copy....DO NOT BUY!!!
***UPDATE*** I made a mistake. For some reason I originally stated I compared it to my "VHS" copy, and that was wrong. I apologize for that. I have the standard DVD version, and I found NO DIFFERENCE between the 2 copies.

One of Clint's early efforts at directing, following Play Misty for Me and High Plains Drifter, it's a must-see for Clint fans and should be a pleasure even if you're not (hard for me to tell because what is WRONG with you?).
Eastwood plays a retired American spy/hitman who finds himself coerced into one final job that requires one of his special talents because his handlers know only that his target is on the next expedition to attempt to climb the north face of the Eiger. "I tried to climb it twice, it tried to kill me twice."
The screenplay was co-written by the author of the novel and has much of the wit and some of my all time favorite Clint dialogue. I know the author had been a little miffed that he'd written a kind of poke at slick James Bond movies and inevitable multiple deux ex machinas (machinae?) and absence of moral ambiguity, and nobody got it, but I'm sure glad he went ahead and did the screenplay. It might be a little slow in the middle for some people - I think both he and Clint expected the audience to appreciate what goes into mountain climbing and didn't give a damn if they didn't - but I love every second of it.

What can I say? It's a Clint Eastwood movie. This may sound chauvinistic and shallow 😛 but one of my favorite scenes was while Clint was training for "the climb" struggling up a mountain with his hot trainer. He was lagging behind and as he looked up the trail at her she stops and flashes her t**s at him. He has a fast recovery and up the mountain he goes.

Art professor by day, government assassin by night. That’s the role played by Clint Eastwood. The film includes elements of hard boiled detective writing with snappy dialogue like when Eastwood tells a henchmen to get his feet of his desk or when flirting with a stewardess. Those parts are great. The major drawback is that the movie becomes about Eastwood climbing the Eiger mountain in Switzerland where he’s supposed to find his target. In fact, the Eiger climb becomes the entire movie. Although there’s some drama there it’s not half as interesting as the great start the film had.

If you like Clint Eastwood, you’ll like this movie. It’s not a western, or a Dirty Harry movie, but still entertaining just the same. Someone told me about this movie many years ago, and while searching Prime the other day, I remembered the name of this movie and rented it. It’s got plenty of action, a lot of Clint, and a lot of George Kennedy. A thriller for sure. Pop plenty of popcorn and enjoy this flick.

This film is a personal favourite. The cinematography is fantastic. The story is entertaining. The best part is the political incorrectness which permeates much of the film. Of its time and all the better for it. And yes the picture quality is stunning.

Great film. I never actually sat and watched this film before the whole way through. Whenever it's been on TV I've either only watched the beginning or the end.
Yes it's a bit dated and in parts it's a bit sexist, but no more so than your early James Bond films.
One of Mr Eastwood's better efforts and definitely worth watching.

A Bond-lite Clint Eastwood actioner from the early 1970's

A Bond-lite Clint Eastwood actioner from the early 1970's. Cheesy in places and entertaining (if you overlook the attitudes/sexism) and featuring some stunning ariel/mountain photography. Universal's blu-ray transfer is very pleasing too and features an excellent John Williams score.

Dated but still exciting in places

Eastwood directs and stars in this unsubtle but still interesting mid 70's thriller. He is a retired assassin for a government agency, who is persuaded out of his art loving retirement for one last job. He, apparently, is also a retired rock climber, and therefore the only man for the job since his mark is one of a group of climbers about to climb the Eiger... but which climber is it..? We don't know. Well, in truth the whodunit is fairly easy to see early on, and the first hour is pretty mediocre 70's fayre.. It's once the climbing starts the tension starts racking up, thanks to Clint's insistence on both acting and directing on location and doing the stunts for real. Sadly, this was to lead to the death of one of the stuntmen climbers, who ironically had previously successfully climbed the Eiger.
Nobody really seems to be taking this seriously, least of all Clint as either actor or director, as the `plot' develops with many a 70's cliché.. girls with afros jumping into bed at the drop of a hat, random nudity, horribly stereotyped camp gay bad guy (who actually names his dog `faggot' in case you don't get the `subtle' clues) and George Kennedy, just to name a few. Eastwood forgets the slack first half once we get to the Eiger in the final section of the movie, and it's the tense climbing scenes rather than any intrigue or 70's styling you will probably remember after the lights come up. Also worth a note is a John Williams score which more than passes muster in setting the scene for that real 70's thriller feel...
Truthfully, Eastwood's indefatigable screen charisma makes this a 4 star movie, despite trying to convincingly play a `womanising-art-lecturer-retired-assassin-rock-climber `, which isn't a part one imagines one is asked to do very often.. However the very poor transfer - which is so bad in places you could be forgiven for thinking you were watching a pirated copy - knocks a star off. It's in widescreen at least, but non anamorphic (meaning it's not designed for modern widescreen TV's and will appear as a letterbox in the middle of the screen, requiring some zooming in to fill out your screen), frequently washed out colours despite the gorgeous locales, and full of other imperfections. Watch the movie, the end is worth it - just try and find the remastered version which is out there somewhere..

An Engrossing Film.

Famous for its true-to-life climbing sequences and mountain action (minus all trace of CGI!), this is a slightly strange combination of Cold War espionage thriller married to boys' own action adventure film but, in my opinion, it works really well - providing you buy into the Clint Eastwood role of Jonathan Hemlock being ruthless, cold-blooded assassin, art college professor, knowledgeable art treasure addict and (for some convenient reason!) talented former mountaineer all rolled into one.
If you can do that, then chances are you'll really enjoy this ride. It's quite a long film but it has several varied and spectacularly-scenic locations and a strong thread of continuity to the story so it's a great journey of a film. You don't have to think too much - just sit back and enjoy being carried along. There's sufficient gravitas to the assassin aspect, there are several elements of humour here and there and it's a great 'widescreen' picture that takes in, as already mentioned, locations in Europe and the USA which are all beautifully filmed in their natural colour with no studio 'tinting' afterwards.
Eastwood was obviously very enthusiastic about making this film and I think his enthusiasm really shines through in the finished result.
