Eight Legged Freaks (DVD) (WS)
What do you get when you cross toxic waste with a bunch of exotic spiders? Eaten. As every fan of classic spine-tinglers knows, given the opportunity and the right chemical enhancement, arachnids will grow to humongous size and wreak havoc upon humanity. In "Eight Legged Freaks" the residents of a rural mining town discover that an unfortunate chemical spill has caused hundreds of little spiders to mutate overnight to the size of SUVs. And they're hungry! When the alarm is sounded, it is up to mining engineer Chris McCormack and Sheriff Sam (Samantha) Parker to mobilize an eclectic group of townspeople, including the Sheriff's young son, Mike, her daughter, Ashley and a paranoid radio announcer named Harlan to battle the bloodthirsty eight-legged beasts.]]>

Nevertheless, this movie is a good chance to see Scarlett Johansson in her early years. She plays a young teenager in the film but was actually 18 at the time it was produced. Its also a good chance to see Kari Wuhrer in her prime, as Scarlett's mother, who was 35 at the time of filming... Two of the best reasons to watch this film right there.
The special effects are also quite well done for a movie of this level. The spider menace does not dissapoint.
The plot is fairly thin, but it has some entertaining side tracks such as the ostrich farm business and the kids being chased by spiders through the desert, on their motor bikes...
All in all, worth watching on a lazy Saturday afternoon.
Fun, exciting, scary but not "bloody" or downright visceral like most contemporary "horror" films.
Granted, giant spiders snack on humans and the humans splatter a few giant spiders with well-placed shot gun blasts yet the film remains much more akin to the classic monster movie "Earth vs the Spider" of the 1950s than to any gore-fest modern audiences are so use to viewing.
If you enjoyed the classic "giant monster" movie "Tremors" with Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, then "Eight Legged Freaks" is right up your alley.
