The product comes as a flat thick piece of cardboard that you need to open up and build yourself. Inside the package includes;
- A rubber band (to prevent the phone from slipping out)
- The headset
- Instructions & Card with QR Code
Keep in mind, what you're buying is indeed high quality but you ARE buying cardboard. Cardboard is known for bending and tearing under pressure. Why do I say this? Within the first day of buying it, the rubber band that comes with the headset teared the cardboard. I have attached a photo of the damage. This is what happens when you place the rubber band without the phone.
I was sent another headset by the company because of this.
The NFC promised came with the product of course. Although this is helpful, I found myself not using the NFC support because I would always launch the apps myself. This may come useful for another, just not for me.
There is a magnet on the side of the cardboard viewer to allow you to interact with games and apps. To trigger it, all you have to do is pull it down and it'll fling back up since there is another magnet on the other side. This does not touch the screen, but rather triggers a touch with the magnetic sensor that comes with the phone. The magnet on the outside that you trigger is not attached with anything but stays rather easily with the opposite magnet.
- Forehead Oil Protection
As disgusting as this sounds, there is protection against your forehead grease. This is the shiny part in the middle of the lenses. This is EXTREMELY helpful as it stops the cardboard from absorbing your body's natural oils. If you have a oily forehead, you do not have to worry. However, if you're passing this headset so other people try it then I recommend cleaning it with a tissue after every use.
These lenses are held by the tabs around the viewing hole. The lenses are not glued onto the cardboard itself which means they are able to rotate and slightly move if you touch them. This does not affect your viewing experience in any way however. What does interfere with your viewing experience are the tabs that are holding the lens. Your eye naturally ignores these tabs as they are not very easy to see when looking through the VR headset. The lenses are perfect as they do not show your phone and only the screen. After buying a plastic VR headset with bigger lenses, the lenses that this headset comes with are amazing. The lenses on the plastic headset I bought were so terrible that I was able to see the edges of my phone and they were badly magnified which ended up making it feel like I was just staring at a TV. Not the best experience, but the lenses on this headset are outstanding.
- Nose Slot
A lot of people have discussed on how uncomfortable the slot for your nose is. I have an average sized nose and it fits just fine. In fact, I find my nose not having any trouble while wearing this headset.
MODIFICATIONS (Please Read):
As I stated before, what you're buying is cardboard and cardboard is susceptible to bending and tearing. I RECOMMEND modifying your headset with a DIY. I have attached photos of my headset with all the modifications I've done. Although it is not very aesthetically appealing, my headset will last WAY longer than when it was not reinforced.
What I Recommend:
- Reinforcing your headset with cardboard/wood
I used wooden skewers to completely reinforce my headset. It is now harder for the cardboard to bend.
- Using Super Glue
When you first build your headset, you'll find that it'll be easy for the tabs to slip out again provoking for you to have to build it again. Putting a little super glue in those tabs will prevent the tabs from slipping out and you'll have a permanent fix.
- Preventing Light From Entering
Using a piece of paper or the little card that the headset comes with to block over some of the tabs. I did this because I found light leaking into the headset while viewing. To fix this I easily cut the card that the headset came with and glued them on over the tabs to prevent light from entering.
If you have ANY questions about my modifications or the headset in general, feel free to comment or message me asking. I will be happy to respond. :)
It was at first, overwhelming to figure out how to assemble the kit, as pictures with no description were provided. Luckily, a card came with the kit with a link to an assembly video on EightOnes main website. The video, while not containing dialogue, maybe unclear to some people it was just what I needed, and assembled the kit without any trouble. The only thing the video left out was some adhesive pad on the side to use for keeping the kit together, but that seemed self explanatory at the sight of the adhesive pads stuck to the side.
After assembling it, I decided to clean the lenses, as cardboard tends to shed. I soon installed the official Google Cardboard app and several other cardboard apps from the Google Play store.
Upon putting on the kit, I was impressed with the sturdiness of the build and the quality of the headstrap that came with it. I imagined that the strap was going to be weak and too large, but it was the exact opposite. It gripped my head well, and made the kit feel like it won't slip.
I quickly discovered three things upon launching my VR apps. One, my phone could not support the fish eye lens that are mandatory in several apps. Two, the cardboard was surprisingly comfortable. And three, my phone's gyroscope was not sensing any of the movements necessary to play all of the VR apps on the store. In basic words, my phone was incompatible with the Google Cardboard apps. This was a major problem for me as you could imagine, so I wish to you consumers out there to test the apps on your phone first before ordering a google cardboard kit.
But, luckily, I wasn't left in the dark. Merely minutes after givig up on the research of any workarounds avaible, to which there were none, I received an email from EightOne asking if there were any questions or concerns. An hour after that, the CEO of the company sent a similiar email to me. I replied to the email about my phone incompatibility, and how I was going to return it, as it was useless to me if my phone could not perform VR.
That was when Emma replied to my email the next day. She looked at the specs of my phone and agreed that there were no workarounds to my plight. In fact, she was so sympathetic to my terrible buyers decision, that she stated she would refund me, and I wouldn't have to return the item. For the first time in my life, I felt valued when I was communicating to customer support. The claims that customer satisfaction is a first at EightOne, is real, and genuine. Emma kept her process, and the next evening, I had received my refund, and kept my VR kit. The "one-time exception" they gave me was not only heartfelt, but astonishing all at the same time.
If you were to buy any Google Cardboard VR Kit, I beg of you to buy this one. It is without a doubt not only the best price I could find, but it's also backed by the best customer support I have ever experienced. So please, this product deserves a 5/5
Applications I would recommend (all free):
Google Cardboard (base application)
Titans of Space (experience)
InMind VR (game)
Crazy Swing VR (experience)
Cosmic Roller Coaster (experience)
Alien Apartment (game/experience)
Zombie Shooter VR (game)
Radial-G Infinity (game)
Don't forget you can also view stereoscopic YouTube videos and it's really cool. Here's an example "Alien Isolation on Oculus Rift DK2" (copy/paste). The particular one I saw is posted by "The Rift Arcade" and they have tons more. You can't control these but man are they fun to watch in the cardboard!
I hope this helped some in their decision. Have fun!
