Benefit Your Practice & Cause Less Harm to Nature by a Return To A Traditional Yoga Rug
Why use a yoga rug in your yoga practice instead of a sticky mat or yoga towel? Because yoga rugs have passed the most important reviewer's examination. But you won't see that reviewer listed below. Who do I mean?
Time judges the usefulness of all things. What works stays and what doesn't gets discarded. The yoga rug was the practice surface for the modern teachers from India (last 200 years) and has passed time's test. The newer practice surfaces which may seem to offer small benefits are over time resulting in massive downsides to the both the practitoner and the planet.
Now a short teaching on Yoga:
The vinyasa (movement with breath) method that is largely practiced through the West today was given to us from the teachings of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and is known as Ashtanga Yoga. Guruji was a student in the lineage of Krishnamacharya - commonly referred to as the teacher of teachers.
When Guruji taught the first Western students they all practiced on Yoga Rugs. As Yoga grew in popularity students needed a surface to practice on. Businessmen without an education in yoga practice saw an opportunity. In the 80's sticky mats were invented with "extra grip" and then shortly after microfiber yoga towels to compensate for how slippery these synthetic mats became after sweating on them.
What was never considered was if this "extra" grip was necessary or even in the long run a problem.
We now know that the small benefits of extra grip, lightweight and inexpensive come at a cost not only to the practitioner but to the planet. Read below how you can do the opposite by using a yoga rug as your practice surface
Build A Strong Foundation - Why Enough Grip Is Better Than Extra Grip
Sthira sukham āsanam. Sthira means strength & foundation while sukham means comfortableness & ease.
This famous teaching from the Yoga Sutra's of Patanjali describes the qualities to cultivate for Asana (Postures).
Extra grip may allow you to be comfortable by supporting you but it replaces the effort needed that results in Sthira. Unless necessary due to a special circumstance, relying on extra grip will not prepare you for the Asanas as they get more difficult. Instead of extra grip it is better to have enough grip.
With just the right amount of grip you can work at your level as you cultivate a the strength of a strong foundation.
With a yoga rug if you need more grip you add water (or sweat) to where the hands and feet go and it will have more traction.
Cause Less Harm To Nature By Purchasing Handcrafted Artisanal & GOTS Certified (Global Organic Textile Standards) Goods
Made By Artists
We took this picture ourselves when we visited the rug weavers in India. While many Yoga companies have never been to India we make yearly trips to study at KPJAYI as well as visit the weavers.
After the first visit to meet the artists we realized the importance of buying quality handcrafted items that we take care of instead over inexpensive mass produced low quality products thought of as disposable.
Each rug takes 3 hours to weave and is done by families that have been weaving for generations. They supplement their incomes from agricuture by weaving in their homes. These rugs are not products made by machines in factories but by artists in their homes in the country.
GOTS Certified, Biodegradeble & No Microfiber Pollution
The organic cotton and dyes are GOTS Certified (Global Organic Textile Standards) to ensure the highest in enviromental and social standards. Cotton is a natural biodegradeable material unlike microfiber which most yoga towels are made of. The washing of microfiber has been linked to the cause of massive plastic pollution to our oceans, air and drinking water.
Save Money, Practice Saucha (Cleanliness) & Give to Charity
Save money by purchasing less often.
Just like using solar power instead of electricity the upfront cost is more but over the long term you save.
When you use a yoga rug on top of a standard yoga mat as we recommend you will never need to buy a yoga mat again.
The rug becomes the surface you use which reduces any wear and tear on the mat to next to nothing.
The rugs will last for years so no need to purchase often which means less consumption, less money spent and less mats in landfills.
Do you wash your sheets or the bed? The sheets.
With a yoga rug you can wash it in your machine as it gets sweat on from use.
This way you can always show up to your practice with Sauca - cleanliness.
The rug is able to get to a level of cleanliness without causing microfiber pollution that a "mat wipe down" can't achieve.
Who are we and what do we want to do?
We are students and teacher's of Ashtanga Yoga and our mission is not only to have a profitable company but for that company to help those that can't help themselves.
We do this by donating 10% of profits from rug sales to protecting wild spaces & the Mysore Foundation.
The Mysore Foundation was started by students that wanted to help childern in India that can't afford basic necessities like medication.

The sticker shock got me too, but after thinking about it, decided it was an investment. I was very pleseantly surprised by how well woven this is; this will never be washed with anything but extra-gentle woolite, on the quickest cycle.
Just had my first 20-minute yoga session on it, and it was worth the cost. It handles very well on top of carpet, and I know this will see many years of use. Vey impressed, a great quality product.
I've found the rug has just the right amount of grip, where my cheap mat was a little too sticky and then became slippery when wet. My grip on the rug stays the same through out practice regardless of how much I sweat. It did take a couple practices getting use to the new feel but I think by having to focus on grounding my hands and feet properly for a few practices it actually helped improve my practice as my hands and feet are now properly engaged with the ground and not depending on extra stickiness of a mat.
Tried numerous different mats but could not get rid of the slippiness of my hands and feet. Made yoga very difficult/unpleasant (down-dog was a nightmare).
Yoga towels were ok but i was constantly adjusting the towel as it got out of alignment.
This rug worked perfectly. I no longer slip and slide and it stays in place.
It is about half the size of my mat and while i would prefer not to, it is not huge burden to carry with me to the studio. I bit on the pricey side but it is going to last years and years (very well made). I go to the studio 3 times a week and i imagine it will require washing every couple of weeks.
