After seeing Marcus King light it up at the 2019 Crossroads Guitar Festival and then play a two hour show last month in DC, we couldn’t wait for this CD to come out. The anticipation built with The Well being the first song release before the CD came out. Cool rockin’ tune. Amazon shipped the CD so that it arrived on the release date. We were stoked to slip it on and put on the jam. Then the first song played...slow ballad right out the gate? Interesting choice. Then comes The Well which we knew already from XM radio and thought, “okay, here we go!”. But it was followed by slow song after slow song. Yeah, they’re good songs, well played, etc. But why tease us with The Well when it’s the only real rocking tune on the whole thing? Very talented, good singer, loved seeing him live twice very recently but jeez are we disappointed. Certainly not road warrior music to help you on the road to El Dorado ... but more along the lines of chill out on the deck in the evening kinda music.
Been a fan of Marcus King and his band since the beginning. Love how this album sounds a bit more polished while still remaining soulful, gritty and raw. With the help of Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys the best comes out in MK. Vocals and guitar on full display. This may be his fourth album (the last 3 are all great in their own right) but it almost feels like he's just getting started. Long fantastic career ahead of him. Ecstatic to be a fan along for the ride.
Where’s his band? Should be called Danmarcus.....there’s a couple of good jams but nothing like the excellent Carolina Confessions or the one before The Marcus King Band...I got into Marcus King because of those 2 albums...please return to the fold!! Hey I get it.. Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, and Sammy Hager tried it...artists can explore but I spent my money for the likes of those 2 albums...come on Marcus jam baby jam
The Marcus King Band has been consistently excellent so I was a bit skeptical about a solo album but Marcus is the real deal, and one of my favorite new artists. This album is no exception and will not disappoint. It maybe his best yet. Certainly it’s more soulful, and every tune is excellent. Don’t hesitate, buy this album.
The album arrived in decent condition, but it also arrived already opened. The shrink wrap had clearly been cut open (there was a clean line, so I doubt it could have been ripped by shipping) and the album was already out of the sleeve. As far as I can tell the press itself is not damaged in anyway, but it is extremely disappointing to pay for a brand new album and receive one that was either previously owned or at the very least handled in this way.
I'm a big fan of Marcus King and have bought all his albums to date. This is another collection of well written songs with much more of a country infused soul rather than the bluesy soul we are used too. Nothing wrong with that change in direction.....my slight disappointment with this album is not enough is made of the strong songs......where have the guitar solos disappeared too? One example would the track 'Love Song'......beautiful melody , great singing but it cries out to segue into a cool laid back guitar break......but instead it just ends after 2.5 minutes.......what a waste!
