Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. What to say about Elaine Stritch? I'm not aware of any one-woman shows that were BAD. Then again, I haven't listened to that many one-woman shows. And any woman who is brave enough to get up there and show the world her soul has my respect. But TALENT and WIT don't always accompany courage.

This has all three. Ms. Stritch is brilliantly honest, energetic, comical, emotional, and this production darn near breaks your heart right after making you laugh until your sides hurt.

Who should get this album:

- anyone who is an Elaine Stritch fan or enthusiast
- anyone who THINKS he or she is an Elaine Stritch fan but realized s/he did not know much about her
- someone who appreciate a comical actress who knows timing better than 90% of the actors and actresses out there today

Who should NOT get this album:

- someone who is looking for a good MUSICAL album. This is not that. Ms. Stritch will tell you her life story and entertain you until your face hurts from all the laughing and eye-dabbing. But she's not a great SINGER. She's not Streisand, B. Peters, or Donna Murphy. So if you think you're going to hear great SINGING from this album, you are sorely mistaken.

- someone who knows NOTHING about Elaine Stritch. Now, I would be FASCINATED with someone like Ms. Stritch upon first listen, but I'm not most people. I think she's fantastic, but she's definitely someone to get used to. And if you know nothing about her work, this might be a tough sell for you.

I live In NYC and this is one show I could "KICK MYSELF" for missing! I have ALWAYS loved Elaine...and this show tells it all, no holds. It is also a huge piece of Broadway history, that is now documented. If you are a kid thinking of "getting into the business" , LISTEN TO THIS FIRST...or look at the DVD!....it is something that is INATE..that you need to be on stage and perform..you may THINK you have IT but have someone else tell you...YES OR NO.....some kids are born performers...some "think" they are..and go through their life thinking that..I always tell anyone that's even thinking of going into this business...GO TO SCHOOL , to have a real backup for your life on earth..it is NOT an easy life, you have to REALLY want it so bad that nothing else matters...and that is what I got from this performance from Elaine Stritch..because it is not your family that is gonna be sitting out in that audience BUT people like me who are very critical on whom I spend my money and to see true TALENT!

....spend an evening there with Elaine Stritch in her one-woman show. It's truly amazing. I saw her in the front row in Los Angeles and a more brilliant night I cannot remember. She's got guts. She's got style. She's got class. And, really, there aren't many more of them like that.

One newspaper review said something along the lines of "Someday, the world will be divided into two groups -- those who saw 'Elaine Stritch at Liberty' and those who wish they had." I went in thinking, "Well, that's got to be an overstatement...and came out wanting to be sure I was on the list of those who had seen it and were so happy to have done so.

She's funny and tragic and has a tale about everyone and everything. If life is a journey, she's taken an amazing one. Buy the CD. Buy the DVD. And then be thankful they've invented the technology to preserve forever a great show and a great night at the theatre.

A few weeks ago I caught a music special on cable TV where various rock and pop stars (many of whom I like) sang their favorite Broadway songs. The effort was gallant but the results were painfully mediocre. I kept saying "their voices are fine, but where's the personality?" Every single one of them would have benefited from hearing Elaine Stritch sing a single note. Her voice? Flawed beyond belief, but she knows exactly what she's doing and where she's going. Authenticity? Impeccable! The sound quality of this recording? I felt like I was sitting right in front of the stage. I don't know how that immediacy was captured and I've never heard it before. Tony awards all around!
