Product description
Star, legend, force of nature--whatever you call Elaine Stritch, it probably applies, and it's never more apparent than in her deeply personal one-woman show, "At Liberty". With only an oversize shirt, black tights, and a chair, Stritch mesmerizes a full house at London's Old Vic Theatre with tales of her 50-plus-year career on stage and screen. It's a priceless glimpse of backstage theatre to hear her recount how she served as standby for Ethel Merman in "Call Me Madam" in New York at the same time she had a featured role in "Pal Joey" playing in New Haven, Connecticut. And she tells about the people she mingled with (Noel Coward, Judy Garland, Rock Hudson), her disappointments both professional ("I blew "The Golden Girls"!") and personal (her bouts with drinking). "At Liberty" is more of a monologue than a musical performance, though she does perform some of her signature songs like "Zip" and "The Ladies Who Lunch." "At Liberty" won a Tony Award in June 2002 for Special Theatrical Event, but Stritch's triumph was tempered when she was not allowed to complete her acceptance speech. Her response to it here is just one of the touching moments in a remembrance of a historic career. "--David Horiuchi"

She hilariously recalls running around like a crazy lady in the name of show-biz dedication (rushing to New York City to see if she was needed as "stand-by" for Ethel Merman in "Call Me Madam; rushing back to New Haven to sing the showstopper "Zip!" in "Pal Joey").
"And you wonder why I drank," she hollers to her captivated audience. And, underlining everything is this: Elaine was a hard-working, self-destructive, lonely, insecure, frightened, vulnerable lady who could never go on stage or on film "alone." This led to life-long alcoholism. Elaine, heartbreakingly, admits that, due to drinking, she was "absent almost always" from her own life. When alcoholism was combined with diabetes, Elaine played a dangerous game of Russian Roulette. She almost lost her battle with the bottle. Yes, she sings her signature song "The Ladies Who Lunch" from "Company" here. But, more importantly, she has earned the right to sing "I'm Still Here." She means every word of Sondheim's song because she has lived it. Yes, Elaine is still here-- and I'm so glad! She closes the show with, of all things, "Something Good" from the film version of "The Sound Of Music." Elaine sings it, full of genuine, quiet graditude, to her audience. This DVD is absolutely essential in the library of every serious show-business and Broadway Theatre aficinado.
I echo all the positive reviews given for her monologue/ show and for Elaine Stritch as a person.
She is tenacious, ballsy, witty, funny, and glad to be alive.
Her show is superbly entertaining!
I am old enough to be familiar with all the Hollywood personalities she talked about. That added to my star struck entertainment. I don't know how much would be lost on younger generations that do not know the reputations of those famous actors.
I once mentioned Paul Newman to a niece. She paused and then said, "Oh... he's the one that makes salad dressing."

Old Vic back in 2002. It was one of the most magical evenings I have ever spent in a theatre.
Song and dance and humour and pathos and old-school Broadway pizzaz. Great legs too!
This DVD serves her memory well.
Each time I watch it I feel like I'm back in the stalls grinning like a madman!
A marvellous epitaph to a consummate performer.
Essential.
