AWS continues its schizo attitude towards Windows Server. On the one hand, new features like domain join are happening (great news). On the other hand, basic info that should be updated in this guide like 2012 R2 and enhanced networking, is left to languish.

Not for the Little Guy

I'm sure for those who are already familiar with concepts relating to cloud computing, this resource is a very helpful way to establish an account and set things up with Amazon. But for the little guy, working at home wishing to conserve his modest funds, it is virtually useless. Critical to folks like us is an assessment of typical costs. When the article talks about economizing it appears to mention it in a corporate context--which likely far exceeds the ability of an individual's understanding of economy. Also, it fails to provide any help to those who are intrigued with the idea of computing in the cloud but who just want to get set up to do it without having to understanding a lot of esoteric concepts as "Store-Backed Windows, AMI" and so forth. (One thing that should always raise a suspicious flag when it comes to clarity is the book's profligate use of acronyms. Sources like these should be required to bear the heading, "Beware of Acronyms! All who enter here are without hope".) What should be provided to ordinary users are some basic plans with step by step examples a description of sample sessions and their actual costs. The sessions should encompass several scenarios that allow the user to see what an expensive session looks like and a not so expensive one looks like. After attempting to read this document, I am left exactly where I was before reading it: is Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) a realistic option for me.

Thought I was trying the free version and ended up with a bill. Do a lot of research and careful selection before implementing. My bill was small but I ended up canceling because even after modifications I was still getting billed for an IP address. So all options are available even when you are lead to believe your are just selecting the free trial setup.
