Destiny, is always unpredictable and only reveals itself at the last minute!
correctly. He is married to Elisabetta Pique, an Argentinian journalist who wrote Life and Revolution.
They have been friends of Pope Francis since he was Cardinal Bergoglio. So he presents himself and
his wife as the closest journalists to the Pope. There is some competition with Austen Ivereigh, who
wrote The Great Reformer. Even Andrea Tornielli, who is one of the closest journalists to the pope
and a friend of O'Connell and Pique, didn't have the scoop that the conclave was turning toward
Bergoglio.
The book is obviously pro-Francis, with no clear political or theological agenda. It clearly supports
his basic populism, informality, and less monarchical approach to liturgies and public events. Ideological
questions are not a big part of this book, and apparently weren't prominent in the conclave. It was about
the relationship between the curia and the bishops around the world. Secretaries of state Cardinal
Angelo Sodano and Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone spent Benedict's papacy as opponents, but got together to
defend the Curia after his resignation.
The basic narrative that we heard is accurate, but is filled in much more detail. The three front-
runners were Cardinals Angelo Scola of Italy, Odilo Scherer of Brazil, and Marc Ouellet of
Quebec City, who is in Rome with the Congregation for Bishops. Scola and Ouellet, like
Christoph Schonborn, are theologians closely tied to Benedict. Scherer, despite being from
South America, became the candidate of the status quo for the Curia. And despite the
concerns about American political power, there were Timothy Dolan of NY and Sean O'
Malley of Boston, as well as Luis Tagle of Manila. Cormac Murphy-O'Connor seems to be a
key source for the author. It was also interesting to hear the reflections of Francis George
of Chicago.
As for Bergoglio, he was the runner-up in 2005, getting support from those who had wanted
Carlo Martini, but was considered too old by 2013. O'Connell reports that his key speech was
given not Friday but Saturday, March 9, 2013, striking themes that by now are familiar.
One important feature of this book is that it provides the vote tallies for each of the votes
in the conclave.
To read this book in the mind-set of the American form of political election is almost to miss the point. This is not a version of American democratic elections, but a unique and ancestral tradition which yet impacts the whole world. Candidates emerge in conversation. The one who became Pope Francis was really no one special, but had the qualifications to lead a world-wide movement with wisdom, experience, and a boldness, second to none.
Different readers will decode the text in diverse ways. It may be a tome most especially for those who enjoy papal history, but I think it has wider value. My experience in reading was that not only are facts presented and reviewed, but readers are invited to form questions for themselves about the meaning of the vicar of Christ in a post-modern technological world where the word "TRUTH" seems to have lost its value.
