Editorial Reviews

Limited vinyl LP repressing of this 1995 album. Electric Wizard was the debut studio album by the English doom metal band. The album was released during 1995 through Rise Above Records. The album cover depicts a woman riding a winged seahorse across a psychedelic ocean floor, which has been decorated with stone statues. The font used for the logo is the same style used for Black Sabbath's self-titled album, a nod to one of the band's inspirations. Electric Wizard formed in 1993 and have recorded eight full length albums, two of which are now considered to be genre landmarks: Come My Fanatics... and Dopethrone. Electric Wizard's brand of doom metal incorporates stoner and sludge traits, with lyrics focusing on the occult, witchcraft, H.P. Lovecraft, horror films and cannabis.

Doom-heads will disagree, but this is Electric Wizard's finest moment. Eighth notes never sounded so heavy (see "Mourning Prayer," "Devil's Bride," "Black Butterfly), and lyrics never sounded so stoned.

There's something about a "black butterfly... traveling through the void of space" while "druids gather at the circle of stones to worship the ancient ones." You'll hear bits about THE wizard visiting on a dragon, ultraviolet suns and magnetic cobs spread in a spinning web. Most stoner rock lyrics are tired, forgettable. But I actually remember writing some of these out when I was a bored kid, trying to piece together the Wizard's lessons.

The album opener ("Stone Magnet") and closer ("Electric Wizard") are utterly brilliant, and will sit among the greatest stonerrock hymns of all time as uniquely Electric Wizard (a lot of the genre borrows heavily from itself).

I hear complaints from friends about the drumming on this recording. I'd agree it lacks the slipperiness and spark of most stoner records, but it doesn't hold this work back.

After recording this record, it's rumored that members of the band were busted for drugs, assaulting a cop and robbery (on separate occasions). One member of the band suffered a collapsed eardrum on stage. These guys are 24-hour metal.

May the gods be praised. This is beyond heavy. Turn this up to 10 and you'll be spitting blood for a week. Dark and disturbed. Fun for the whole family. Trust me on this! I only gave 4 stars because, well listen to their CD DOPETHRONE!

Heard Mountain of Mars on Pandora, and I was literally hooked. For a debut album, sounds like the band has been doing this for a while before they recorded this album. Like all things Electric Wizard, heavier than the heaviest object you can image, yet its not heavier than Electric Wizard. All the songs have great grooving mind blowing jamming riffs. Love how the guitar work is done and produced, I want that sound out of my guitars. Electric Wizard is low, stoney, and doomy, its addictive.

The Wiz starts of with "Stone Magnet", and it gets better from there! Super slow and heavy, the most raw of EW, more Sabbath influenced, probably because of how young the band was. Other favorites are "Behemoth" , "Electric Wizard", hell they are all great.

I constantly scream "BEHEMOTH" while in the shower or on the toilet and it drives my wife nuts!

Electric Wizard: The heaviest band in the world. Bar none...

Excellent, excellent excellent. The only album better than this is "Come My Fanatics" but this is a close second! If you aren't already familiar with Electric Wizard, this is a good place to start.

Underated debut from the doom collective known as Electric Wizard, starting off the group who will make some of the most intense music ever known to man. While relatively calm compared to the mind bending bass destroying sludge of "Come my Fanatics", "Electric Wizard" has all the qualities expected in a stoner album and shows glimpses of genius only to be realised on future releases. Even thought not their best album, this comes well regarded and is a personal favourite of mine.
