My only disappointment with this unit (if it can be called that at all) has been that the output gain is limited in its ability to control the whole signal. I think this is more of my own doing than the unit's. Specifically, I leave it in the "off" (all the way left/counter clockwise) position and it still puts out a signal at quite a high gain level, thanks to the input gain. I run the input high into the tubes to get some crackle and ambiance, so the output has its work cut out for it. If you are playing a venue, this unit has more than enough gain to get the vocals above the whole mix. I would still like the output gain to work in more of a volume control fashion than true gain, but it certainly demonstrates EHX's understanding and mastery of audio equipment.
This is one of the few units that can be purchased, plugged in, and instantly does what it says.
For live use it would be more of a hassle than it is worth since you have to set levels and gain around minimizing the buzz. Using a noise gate can clean some of that up, but either way you are killing a lot of the tone and character that you are supposed to get from the tubes.
The same goes for recording: getting rid of that buzz will also clean out the character you want from the tubes.
Yes, I did make sure the tubes were in tight as one review I read suggested.
Lastly, at one point it just stopped working: all I got out of it was the buzz.
Always loved my Holy Grail and Big Muffs, but this thing is awful.
Now it's great if used with balanced sources like DBX 160a compressor, PBC 6-a compressor, anything balanced thaat has balanced inputs...
the thing is if going into unbalanced gear, youll hear hum...HORRIBLE
Going into a balanced source GREAT CLEAN SOUND....
I have one, but cant use it with my RNC, RNLA or my older DBX 163x compressors or my unbalanced Alesis QuadraVerb...
