Love that it is bag-less and you can see exactly what and how much it picks up. Feels very sturdy though not overly heavy. I have both hard floors and carpet. Love the large hard floor attachment, I can cover the floor much faster and despite its size is still very maneuverable in tight spots. The carpet brush picks up excellent yet thin enough to get under beds and most furniture and still very maneuverable. Canister is very easy to dump out contents.
The cord could have been a little longer compared to my old vacuum. I have to use a couple different outlets in order to reach all the surface areas. While I do love the size of the hard floor attachment, the suction is not as great and I will have to go over stuff it won't pick up the first time several times for it to pick up. I've noticed the crevice tool stored in the handle tends to fall out while I am vacuuming. My biggest beef is with storing it. To wrap up the hose and hold it together with the attached bungee cord is a joke. My previous vacuum stored all its attachments on the canister for easy access when vacuuming and storage. Not so with this one. There is no place to store the hard floor attachment or the furniture nozzle attachment. The bungee cord does not hold any of it down. After taking several minutes trying to wrap it all together, I picked it up and it all came undone. So despite Electrolux's recommended storage solution, I end up just leaving the hose attached to the wand and the carpet brush. Then just putting the other 2 attachments on the floor next to it in the closet. Not crazy about this but for it's overall excellent performance I can live with it.
2 Months Later update:
Now that the excited newness of the vacuum has worn off, I am pretty frustrated with the lack of suction with the hard floor attachment. Please note that I empty the canister after each use. My kids tracked in a bunch of tiny pebbles and small bits of dried mud that the vacuum won't pick up unless I detach the whole telescoping wand and suck them up individually with the handle itself. All the hard floor attachment does it push around anything that is heavier than dust bunnies. I also am having a problem with the attachments that are stored in the handle constantly falling out while I am vacuuming. I am seriously considering returning this because my entire downstairs is hard floor and this vacuum only works great on carpet. I love it's performance cleaning the carpet.
If you're looking for the original American made LUX, it's now called Aerus Lux. I am a vacuum service technician, and the LUX reviewed here is one of the most effective deep cleaning cannister vacuums available. It is so satifying to use! Now there are issues the consumer should be aware of...
First when you turn it on, it starts up slowly. This is a good thing, as the motor is brought up to speed slowly, and this will contrubute to longer motor life on the main suction motor. Unfortunately, The Electrolux has some puzzling problems which can contrubute to downtime. If you use the product gently, without housekeeper assitance, then the vacuum can certainly hold up fairly well for many years. But, there are possible issues with this and other similar E'LUX models that can most certainly contibute to owner consternation.
OK.... As you see in other comments, the wand can be quite problematic. The most troublesome issue is it's tendency to short out internally, sending a spike into the main control board. I have acually had 4 or 5 wands do the same thing on the same vacuum in for repair.
Another frequent problem is hose failure. This is not as frequent as the wand problem.
NOW, a very prevelent problem area is the power nozzle, which is a bit fragile, and is very difficult to work on. The problems that come up with frequent regularity are in the Elbow, Foot release and the Height adjustment components. The release and height adjustment should be used gently. These are all plastic assemblies, and if you're rough on these parts, they will fail.
Keep in mind that the vacuum has a three year warranty parts and labor. Electrolux is very good about handling warranty issues.
Call Electrolux, if you need to take it to the Warranty Station... follow up every few days. If they cannot fix the problem, and if you're contantly having to take your unit back over and over again, Eletrolux will usually replace the entire unit.
NOW, If you're looking for grandmother's lux, you will not find it here. They do make a copy of the old Lux that is quite effective and with reasonable care these units can last with very little maintenance for a decade or more. It's called the Perfect. A bit hard to find... It is very reliable, and still uses a metal main housing, and best of all it's far more powerful then the original Lux that it duplicates.
About $650.00 to $699.95 at your local vacuum shop. If you've ever been home pitched on a TriStar, the PERFECT is a better choice at less than half the Tristar money.
After that I decided to pull the trigger on Electrolux UltraActive. I couldn't find any reviews on it; I was only able to find specs and based on that it has more power 2100W vs 1400w in my old one, and also new design for the wand and motorized brush head.
So I placed an order on kohls.com and after I got it I was pretty surprised how good it is with a few quirks :)
- It's much quieter than my old Electrolux vacuum
- New updated design of the wand and brush head seems more durable
- It doesn't use bags (it's bagless vacuum)
- It is way more powerful than the old one
- After you push the power button - it takes a second or so for it to turn on - at first I kept pressing power and thought it was broken, but it is just the way it works. Press it once and it will start. I had to get used to it, but it's not a big deal.
- Because it is so powerful, when I set it to the Max power the cover of the hepa filter kept popping up first couple of times, but after that I figured how to lock it in place so now it's fine.
I haven't find any cons and I like it very much. It is very compact, nice looking vacuum with good maneuverability and power. Everything you need from the vacuum cleaner.
