2069 - No longer governed by politicians, the developed world is divided up into regions controlled by megacorporations known as Syndicates. These Syndicates have revolutionized how the consumer interacts with the digital world. No longer does the consumer require a device to access the world's data and control their technology, they can do this at the blink of an eye via neural chip implant. Civilians flocked to be "chip'd" and enjoy all that their selected Syndicate has to offer; housing, medical, banking, insurance, education, entertainment and jobs. One complete package. One complete lifestyle. In return, the Syndicates gained unprecedented insights, and control, over the individual and their behaviour. With little governmental oversight, business has become war. The Syndicates will stop at nothing for ultimate market dominance. At the front line of this war are the Agents, the Syndicate's bio-engineered and chip-augmented enforcers. They can breach anything in the wired world including their enemies, their weapons and the environment that surrounds them, making them the most efficient and deadly technological weapons in the world. Take on the role of Miles Kilo, Eurocorp's latest prototype agent, and embark on a brutal action adventure of corruption and revenge.

This game gave me a bit of trouble at first, but this WAS NOT the game's fault but the result of user error. First this is an Origin game and as such requires a DVD key entered either under Origin or thru the game's interface. But there is some thing that buyer need to know which confused me. (This wasn't EA's fault but the "placement" of "where" the key code is which misled me.) Anyway it came in OK and in good shape. Then I tried to install it under Origin but after excepting the key code, it stopped and I had no game! After going thru this twice, I contacted EA-Origin support with my question why. At first they did not understand why I was having a problem as the idea showed to be installed under my Origin account. The on really good guy told me the item I had activated showed up under my account but was an "add-on" feature to the game. (He didn't know that his answer clued me to check for another key. The dvd key for this game was ON THE BACK of the game manual itself and not the insert that I had used. I missed the fact that the insert was for additional content for the game! Once I entered this key everything went great and the game downloaded and installed without a problem! The game is first person and takes a bit of getting used to. I haven't played it very much, but it runs solid on my system. (i5 4460 3.2 gig, 16 gig RAM, GTX-750 Ti SC 2 gigs GDDR5 RAM., Win 10 Pro.) After the installation problems this game loads and plays well.

Disclaimer: I never played the original Syndicate. Also, this games requires EA's DRM, Origin. Take that as you may.

If there is a regret I have with this reboot of the Syndicate franchise, is that we only got a glimpse of the world that Richard K. Morgan had a hand in developing. It is a shame because Mr. Morgan is a very good sci-fi author and I feel that unexpectedly the world (and not the story) of this reboot is one of its strongest aspects.

An FPS to explore this cyberpunk setting is a bit of a shame, the frantic firefights and relatively narrow corridors don't leave much room to player to be able to appreciate the setting (unlike in Deus Ex). Besides that I find that the mechanics and synergy behind the firing and hacking are quite well done and fun. Which is expected, as this has been one of the hallmarks of Starbreeze who worked on the Riddick games.

The single player is short and a bit predictable. I enjoyed it but it could have been better and some boss fights are annoying.

The co-op campaigns are another highlight of this game, and I feel they are the closest you will get to the original game. Up to four agents must accomplish a series of objectives in 4 level mini campaigns. There is a progression system between your agents and their guns.

In conclusion, I enjoyed it and had no regrets paying the full price. However your mileage may vary depending and how much you loved the original Syndicate and/or EA.

Syndicate was an "okay" shooter. I picked up for $15, so wasn't overly disappointed, but I was ready for it to be over about 3/4 of the way through.

Syndicate's main mechanic is upgrades you can unlock after you defeated certain enemies and obtain their chips similar to the one implanted in you. These different unlocks can link together to give bonuses, but overall, there were no upgrades I really saw and went "Oooh, I gotta have that". The upgrades help a little but not much. By the end, you don't receieve very many, either. You still seem to be fairly squishy and die somewhat easily. The other mechanic here is these software programs that you use like special powers. You can force a guy to kill himself and he explodes hurting others, you can convince someone to fight for you (they aren't especially helpful, but it removes an enemy and distracts others) and you can temporarily knockdown/disable an enemy by making his weapon backfire. These skills are useful but would have been more compelling to have more than just three skills.

This brings me to a very frustrating aspect of the game. There are certain bosses or sequences that were brutally hard in my opinion. The overall pacing of the game is up and down in terms of difficulty. Some bosses took 10+ tries to overcome while others was a straight up piece of cake walkover. The frustrating sequences were enough to almost uninstall this game. I was along for the ride but reluctantly many times.

The mouse control in my opinion is not very good. Aiming didn't seem smooth at all, typical of a lot of console ports. It's not game breaking but not what I come to expect from a game on PC (but not surprised considering its a port). As I mentioned, about 3/4 of the way through the game, I was rushing just to finish it to uninstall to make way for something else. There are definitely better shooters out there. If I could take it back, I wouldn't want to pay much more than $5-10 for this title.

I don't know why this game got low reviews in some places. I think it's tons of fun. I'm a big fan of the original Syndicate on the Amiga and there's some definite influence and homage to the original. Fans of Deux Ex should enjoy this as well. Some people bitch about there only being three "hack" types used against enemies, but that's plenty I think. You can "hack" plenty of other things for some interesting effects as well so it's not like those three hacks are the only hacks you do. And I haven't played multiplayer yet, but I've read that there are more hacks you can do in multiplayer that aren't available in single player. Ok, so the game calls them "breaches" but we're all thinking "hack". :)

The only downside to this game is Origin. Thankfully it's the only game I play that requires Origin. It's not that Origin does anything wrong, but I don't use Origin for anything other than it auto-loads when you run the game so it's kind of useless and is a far inferior content delivery system to Steam. It delivers the game and that's it. Steam does so much more. Oh well, small price to pay for a fun game.
