With money and powerful business connections but no title, Colin McCrae is invited everywhere but accepted nowhere. He intends to marry someday, but when he does it will not be to a shallow woman like Lady Georgina, whose only concerns appear to be status and appearance.
But beneath her flawless exterior, Georgina's social aspirations stem from a shameful secret she is desperately trying to keep hidden--and that Colin is too close to discovering. Normally I am not one for books that mention religion and talk in-depth about it but this book just made it work. I really felt for the characters and especially Georgina's determined study of it. Once again, absolutely perfect!
This is no doubt going into my favorites collection AND I daresay it might be my favorite book EVER! Move over other books, An Elegant Facade is coming through!!!
Lady Georgina Hawthorne is determined that marriage to the right suitor will guard a lifelong secret, one that even her closest family and friends are totally unaware plagues her conscience. Until Colin McCrae, a dear friend of her brother-in-law, successful but not titled, feasts his eyes upon the beautiful, but rather conceited young debutante. Up until now, no one in Georgina's elite social associations has dared to probe beneath the Georgina's icy emotional veneer. Imagine her utter dismay when the handsome Scottish businessman becomes the obnoxious little voice in her head, that whispers the truth; "You don't have to protect yourself. You are safe."
On most days, Colin McCrae doesn't even want to like Georgina Hawthorne, much less nourish an attraction, but for some reason they continually cross paths. It's obvious to everyone that Colin does not meet her impossible standards for a husband, but neither can he cannot prevent himself from blocking her attempts at foolishness. And then, he sees into her heart, transforming "An Elegant Facade" into the kind of story that pulsates with tender romance while dangling over a precipice of disaster.
Enjoy every minute spent in Kristi Ann Hunter's "Hawthorne House".
The tension between the characters was well done, especially Georgina's journey that drives the story. Colin made a good counterpoint to all that she valued and appreciated, and I have to say that I grew to love her while Colin did. My heart broke when I realised what she had going on, knowing that it's still a problem for so many people today.
Well written, great characters and story world setting. Book three begins tomorrow!
I kind of thought her and Colin would be a couple when reading the first book. There was tension there, so something had to happen between them! And I'm glad it did. I liked reading how it all evolved for them and Georgina was able to humble herself to accept him.
A character I could not stand, and greatly loathed, in the previous book "A Noble Masquerade" has truly come into her own. I am happy to say I was completely, and utterly, mistaken about Georgina.
The author had an interesting an completely believable explanation for Georgina's behavior and motivations. I was sympathetic to her struggles and her fear of honest vulnerability with herself and members of her extended family. It is unusual to see such dramatic growth and change in a character that I had totally dismissed.
What a wonderful book! The time I spent reading this book flew by. 'Definitely worth reading again and again!
It is a true JOY to read a book
SPOILER ALERT: Felt like a little anticlimactic to end the book in the marriage bed with a bible...(LOL, do people really do that?) Maybe I've been a Christian too long, but would've been nice to throw a few more kisses in here and there. Otherwise, the author has a good writing style and I hope she continues.
