I live 50-60 miles from the nearest towers surrounded by oak trees. I was still using an old style fish bone antenna with a pre-amp and a powered signal booster just to get 50% signal strength. Used the old style DB8 and got up to 60% strength. I Decided to go all in and buy the newer DB8e and now I am up to 70%-86% signal strength with NO AMPLIFICATION!!!! Decided to take the old DB8, mount it in my attic pointed it at towers in the opposite direction and combine the signal off both UHF antennas with a Monster 3Ghz splitter used as a combiner. This added 3 more channels. Got greedy and purchased the C5 VHF extreme range that comes with a VHF/UHF combiner and mounted it directly over my DB8e. Now I have 3 antennas signals combined and receiving every channel with 100 miles of me with a minimum of 50% signal strength up to 86% all with no added amplification. WOW!!!!!!

The biggest benefit of these antennas is that birds, ice or wind are no issue. No more bent up ugly antenna on my roof. I feed all of this signal to my Tivo DVR combined with a streaming service (Netflix and/or Amazon Prime) so the Dish or Direct TV guy can kiss my rear. Over-the-air broadcasting is REAL HDTV.

I'm going to compare this to the ClearStream4 antenna, which I also purchased. The ClearStream4 Antenna was a lot more difficult to assemble having more pieces. The instructions were not the greatest either. The DB4-E basically came almost pre-assembled, just needing to connect two pieces. Though the ClearStream4 did a decent job of picking up stations, the DB4-E antenna gave me another bar on signal strength on most of my channels. Between the two antennas, I would definately recommend the DB4-E over the ClearStream4 antenna.

I cut the cable/satellite cord over 2 years ago. Originally I installed a different OTA antenna and it seemed that over time the signal on a few channels was starting to drop (i do not remember the make/model but it does not appear to be a current model either). It could be the trees are getting in the way, or new buldings - I don't know why something that once worked began to work less well. So, figuring that newer technology may have improved things I went ahead and purchased this unit on amazon. I also purchased a universal mount pole as well. I use a SiliconDust HDHomeRun as my receiver. It converts the OTA signal to ethernet so I can access the programming on my home network. The HDHomeRun also has software that allows me to measure the signal/video/symbol quality as a bar graph from 0 to 100%. For what it is worth, I then use SageTV on a server to digitally record and distribute the shows to my TVs and computers throughout the house.

Installation: The unit requires minimal assembly. It was easy to point and aim it in the direction most likely to work. Go to [antennaweb dot org] to get information about angles and distances to stations. I mounted the antenna in my attic of a 2 story house, but it could be mounted outdoors if your neighborhood allows such things.

Cons: (none)

Pros: Works great. This antenna improved the reception by at least 3% on all channels compared to my old antenna and some channels by 15%. It may not seem like much, but this was the difference between marginal and good reception on some channels. A few of the stations I receive are 57 miles away, at over 80%. I do live in a very flat area so your results could vary.

Summary: Cut the cord! You can live without ESPN. You can do it with this antenna.

I owned the Antennas Direct DB4 for roughly 3 years and was very happy with its overall performance. Its roof mounted(outside) on the J-30 mast and it held up very well to some of the nasty winds and weather we get here in upstate, NY. Anyway, I had my roof done so I figured Id give the DB4 to my bro-inlaw and buy the latest unit, the DB4e. With a limited amount of testing I feel like the general performance of the DB4e is *slightly* better for channels that I was receiving already. We had a few fringe channels that appear to come in a little better now and actually stay clean the whole time so thats an improvement. However, we didnt gain any new channels so this new version(DB4e) is NOT a revelation or anything. People are probably wondering if they should upgrade or not. I say for most users its not neccessary to upgrade if your current DB4(older model) is working well and you are happy. I dont think this one will do a heckuva lot. If there are some channels that you wished came in better then the upgrade is probably worth it.

Lets summarize that:

Its WORTH the upgrade IF - certain channels do get picked up by your current DB4(old model) but the reception is a little dodgy at times or you need that little extra boost to have it stay clean and clear the whole time.

Its NOT WORTH the upgrade IF - You are hoping to pull in channels that you never received before. This new unit wont likely help.

The DB4e is larger than the orignal by a decent amount but still works with the same J-mount mast. Build quality is about the same which I always felt was pretty good. Of course if you dont currently have any antenna or have an older crappy one, by ALL means get the DB4e - its a good product that has always served me right and its held up well in the weather too. Its priced right too, IMO.

Id also suggest trying to mount it outside as high as you can. That alone makes a HUGE difference with any antenna. Good Luck!
