Strange things start to happen when she runs into an old friend from high school named Ryan. The two have an unusual affect on each other for seemingly no reason (Not once does Natalie even consider the pills she's been taking to be the cause). The story would be a great read for anyone who enjoys young adult romance. However, those of the more paranormal/Science Fiction nature, will find this book lacking in the paranormal department until about charpter 6 or 7. Keep in mind this book only has 8 chapters total.
If I had written this, I would have waited for Element part 2 to be completed and then simply merged the two novellas into one novel to give the reader a better experience with the story as a whole.
I still look forward to reading Element Part 2 since it picks up where this one leaves off and I already know since the paranormal elements come into play at the end of this one that they will be there in force in the second one.
New Readers, I urge you not to stop reading this series simply because this part didn't live up to your standards, pick up a copy of Part 2 and see how the story plays out, you may get surprised.
I give this book 3 of 5 paws
Saga: is a long detailed story . Often times giving an accounting of heroic events as they unfold. At least this is what I learned back in H.S. literature class. An example I can think of is Lord of The Rings.
This (book) is 8 chapters . More of a Novella and not a full book at all. I have seen this tactic with independent author's before; making a certain amount of chapters available free and calling it part 1 and then charge for the rest of the book or books . Some authors put some real effort into those first chapters . Meaning it has some meat to the story making a reader want to know more. When a author does this well I haven't minded buying the next book. Other author think about giving a lot of filler in the first chapter's barely expanding on the blurb until the last few pages and they'll pay me for part two. It's this reader's opinion that that is the approach CM Doporto has taken. If I read just the blurb and the last 15 pages I have enough information to keep my money.
However, I read all the pages . I'm not big on spoilers and I don't provide them even when I dislike an author's work. In a general sense here is my take away. The writing had me rolling my eyes a great deal. Natlie voice didn't come across as a 18 year-old freshman away from her parent's for the first time. She is made to sound very jaded about life a love.
In contrast a twenty-two year old male character voice is just as unbelievable because he comes across as a very young adolescent wanting to talk about his feelings and virtue all the time.
Then there are poor choices in phrasing. (She turned her head in disgust as she passed by *name* she heard him smirk but didn't turn around to acknowledge his high school behavior) I cannot understand what the author was attempting with hearing a facial expression? As it would be impossible for her to even see a smirk. If she was faced away from him.
This saga is supposed to be paranormal however there is hardly a hint of that until the abrupt end. It really didn't feel like a cliff hanger to me. I would say it was more like reaching a word count goal then plugging part 2. I couldn't recommend this book to others.
*omitted character name.
