I got this along with Elementary Japanese Vol.1. These are the best Japanese textbooks I've encountered in my 4-5 years of studying Japanese. These are for serious students of the Japanese language. They are well-worth the price, have nice and sturdy hard-covers, and I'm sure I'll keep them forever as a reference. I highly recommend both volumes of Elementary Japanese.

The book is organized by grammar patterns, with new kanji and vocabulary to learn each chapter. It builds on previously learned grammar very well, and gives readers a very thorough understanding of Japanese by including plenty of example sentences, realistic dialogues, and clear explanations of rules. It also builds a very good foundation for Japanese because you learn a large variety of grammar as well as useful vocab and common kanji. I learned so much from this book!

I am learning Japanese on my own. A tutor recommended Volume One, and after I finished it I ordered the second volume. It is well organized, easy to use, and comes with a very helpful CD. I don't have much to compare it to, since this is my first Japanese-learning attempt, but I'm very satisfied.

The only problem I have is that I don't think there's more in the series. I need "Intermediate Japanese Volume One" after I'm done with this book!!

I used Elementary Japanese (vol 1 and 2) to supplement the textbook my Japanese 1 students use. EJ has some concise and helpful charts that help students make sense of more difficult parts of Japanese (counting, for example). I highly recommend EJ.

I found this book very well structured. Each section gradually adds new grammar and kanji to the game, always reviewing past knowledge in a smooth, effective way.

It assumes the reader already knows the kana systems, and there's not a single line in romanji throughout all the text (this should not be a problem in any case: kana is just a memory exercise and there are two resume tables right at the beginning of the book.) Each section contains a dialog, a careful explanation of the new grammatical rules contained there and exercises, After the first section and the obvious "hello", "good night" and "sorry" there are no "formed sentences" to learn by heart, everything is explained in detail to allow the student a detailed understanding of any topic, with plenty of examples. All dialogs and several exercises are available as mp3 audio files on the CD-ROM.

You must keep in mind that this is a textbook to be used in class, so it is slightly biased towards classroom activities and dialogs, and it is intended for college students. If you are motivated or well disciplined this is definitely a great book for self-study.

I am really glad I bought this...

Excellent format - lessons in Manga format with clear grammar explanations following. I use it as a supplement to Genki 1 and 2, which are the textbooks used in my classes at IU. UCB claims to cover both volumes in just one year, which makes the pace much more intense than at IU, which uses Genki 1 for the first two semesters and Genki 2 for the second two semesters.

If you already know the hiragana and katakana systems, this book is a great choice. If you don't know either, you won't learn how to write or read them here. If you are a motivated self-studier, this is the book for you.
