...they lied, and knowingly gave her a "magical STI". After she found out they lied to her, the men in question pretended ignorance, told her she should know better than to trust a man who said he was 'safe' when he wanted to sleep with her, and even her best friend agreed that this was her fault because she should have known better. We all know men who want to sleep with you aren't trustworthy, right? When she again tries to escape, she is again attacked because she hasn't slept with everyone yet.
At this point in time I stopped reading. There is nothing romantic or humorous about lack of consent, being threatened with death for saying no, and being lied to about if intimacy is safe (reproductive coercion). If you think these things are funny or make for a great read, this is the book for you.
Arizona "Ari" Smoke is my main girl! I absolutely love the way she is portrayed. While she may express some hesitation when it comes to bedding a few elemental plumbers that she just met that claim that she is their mate, homegirl has been around the block more than a few times and more than enjoys herself when it comes to bedroom activities. It is so rare nowadays that you find a character that isn't inexperienced or hesitant when it comes to the steamy scenes. On top of her confidence in the bedroom, she's got some hilarious puns related to her plumbers and their *ahem* equipment. She and her best friend, Britt, are an absolute hoot together. Britt's fierce loyalty to her friend is admirable and she is totally unapologetic about who she is and what she likes. I can appreciate a confident best friend!
Ari's men...I had to stop and fan myself a few times. These elementals are H.O.T!! Sizzling. Kinky. Swoon-worthy. Raunchy as hell! Do you like yourself a hot man with tattoos and surprises down under? You are sure going to love these elementals. Shane, Billy, George, and Reg are my new favorite reverse harem quad. These four are perfect compliments to one another, and I was cracking up so many times at their antics with Ari. That first scene when Ari meets a few of them had me losing it. On a different note, names are fairly important to me when it comes to male leads. Personally, if someone said they were dating a George or Billy, sexy isn't what would first come to mind. This book completely changed that. Especially for Billy...that bad boy can solder my pipes any time. ;) I know we aren't supposed to have favorites when it comes to men in these reverse harem books, but I usually have one or two that stand out for me personally. I think Reg was that one for me in this book. He is so vulgar and unapologetic and I LOVED it. And Shane...that plunger though. George is a sweetheart. He's the easy going one of this group but still just as smokin'.
Besides the outstanding characters the authors have developed, there is a crazy plot line that will throw quite a few twists at you and have you wondering what exactly is going on. One of them absolutely threw me for a loop but I was totally pleased with that addition to the story. I really love the supernatural world, too. The elementals are like nothing I've ever read about before. I enjoyed learning about how their society works and exactly what they can do. There's also quite a few other supernatural creatures that pop up in the book. I would be totally cool with a spin-off related to a few of them! And that ending! I NEED MORE. STAT. PRONTO. ASAP.
Elements of Mischief is a paranormal reverse harem gem that is sure to stand out among others in the genre. Tate James and C.M. Stunich have created a fantastical world that I was not ready to leave when I turned the final page on my Kindle app.
First: There is no real story in the first half of book one. Just this lady gets forced into a marriage with 4 dudes in the most stupid way ever. Then she is with them but is mostly whining that she doesn’t want to be married but wants to have sex all the time. Doesn’t want a relationship, but wants sex until she can leave. Never does she really protest what’s happening too hard because the sex is too good. Like literally whenever something important or dangerous is happening this idiot is thinking about sex, she can’t focus on saving her life long enough. A bit of a story starts being developed in the second half but it is more of an afterthought.
Second: PLUMBER PUNS. I read the reviews and someone said it wasn’t too much, that it was funny and appropriate. It was not! At no point was it funny, they were mostly cringeworthy. This lady acts like a twelve year old that can not think about sex unless it is in plumber puns or euphemism. I swear there is at least one plumber pun every page and I was reading this in my phone where pages are shortened. It was ridiculous! This writer had to go out of her way and go down the aisle of a repair store and find out all the different tools a plumber uses so that she could do this. Sometimes it didn’t even make sense since as a layman we wouldn’t know the lingo. Just assume she is talking sex. It was just too much, not funny, mostly cringeworthy, so I just started skipping all the parts she was describing a plumber pun when I could.
Third: So many inconsistencies! Keeps saying not to slut shame her very slutty friends but then on the other hand she pretends she is not slutty at first with the guys because she is embarrassed (everyone in this book is very slutty). Blames all her shortcomings on being a barista, can’t quote poetry because I am a barista, don’t understand this because I am a barista, etc. Honestly your profession doesn’t necessarily dictate your intellect, this was just a cop out. She does the same thing with the guys, because they are plumbers. Another big one, her grandmother continuously helps her throughout the books but the lady ignores her EVERY TIME the grandma gives a warning cus she rather have sex/drink/talk to others than to this person who is literally trying to warn her about imminent danger against her life. Also this lady is an alcoholic, in the first book it takes about 3 days before she eats anything all she does is drink and throw up, and you can’t even suspend your disbelief because the characters tell you that she hasn’t eaten and is just drinking. Everyone thinks she has a drinking problem but the lady treats it as a joke and just drinks more as her husbands enable her. It’s pretty sad.
All around stick to Spirited hopefully the second book is as good as the first and just stay away from this one. I honestly feel like I just wasted all this time.
