Editorial Reviews

Dream Theater stunned the world of music with the release of their 1991 gold record release, Images and Words and have since gone on to sell millions of CDs worldwide and are now recognized as one of the greatest progressive rock acts of all-time. One of the most vital components of Dream Theater’s trademark sound is undoubtedly the incredible vocal force of James LaBrie. Blessed with unrivaled power and an almost inhuman vocal range, LaBrie lets himself stretch out far beyond the boundaries of Dream Theater. And hey, isn’t that what a solo album is really for?

On Elements of Persuasion James surrounds himself once again with world-class musicians and describes the sound on E.O.P. as effectively traversing the distance between the moody and atmospheric and heavy and experimental. New sounds and recording techniques are in abundance.

Engineered by Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Seal, Pink, Mick Jagger), Elements of Persuasion adds new facets to James LaBrie’s already sparkling career.

Being that James LaBrie is the lead singer for one of today's premier progressive metal bands, Dream Theater, comparisons to that band are inevitable. I'm a big DT fan, so if anything I write from hear on out sounds like a DT putdown, it isn't meant that way.
Having said that, I can say this: Want to know what this album is? Basically, take all the fantastic, heavy guitar riffing from DT and concentrate on that. Minimize the progressive tripping but still make the songs long enough that they leave you feeling fulfilled. No 3 1/2 minutes-and-I'm-gone stuff here.
I'm a hit-or-miss prog-metal fan, so for me this album is simply fantastic. So often when listening to DT, out slams this wonderful, chunky, deep guitar riff and I'm jammin' along. Then, 8 seconds later, it's completely abandoned as they go off on some tangent. That's the nature of prog-metal and not a criticism of DT (remember my first paragraph above), but not always what I want. Much of the time I WANT THAT RIFF. James serves them up, song after song, with a truly talented guitarist and backing band.
That's not to say the songs are one-dimensional, either. There's variety here, and he tries a few things you might not expect (turntable scratching on a metal song? Whod've thunk it? *chuckle*). I've read criticisms of his voice, but I don't know what planet those people live on. James has a great voice and uses it well throughout this album.
This is metal how it should be done, in my humble opinion. Heavy but not annoyingly fast, great drums that don't overwhelm, an excellent groove and great singing. And solos, for crying out loud! Nu-metal fans probably won't know what they're hearing. Hey guys, guess what those skinnier strings on the guitar are for!
Oops, got a little silly there, sorry. I just love this album. The songs are distinct and fresh. The vocals are excellent. The lyrics aren't about breasts, beer and partying 'till you drop. Highly recommended!

Excellent Album ! Super musicians and great songs. I'm a big DT fan and I actually liked this album better than the DT album that was out around the same time (8varium). I actually got to meet James at a meet & greet last year. Very cool and well grounded person.

This CD from James Labrie is very heavy. It sounds amazing. The production is top notch. The guitarist's name is Marco Sfogli and he is a wicked player. Mike Mangini plays drums and sounds very cool. I hope James Labrie continues to use this quality line-up of musicians and releases more albums like this. Although I love most things that Dream Theater has released, I think that this is definitely a refreshing collection of music for all DT fans. Unlike other reviewers, I think that Alone (track 2) sounds very awesome and is not "nu-metal" at all.

Instead of the insipid Octavarium, this is the albumn Dream Theater should have made. I'm astounded at the level of musicianmanship and songwriting that's on display here - in DT, Labrie may have to play second fiddle to Petrucci/Portnoy but here, he demonstrates that he's just as good a musician than they. All the songs are listenable and there's a good mix of heavy, hard-hitting rock, slower pieces and some jazzy numbers as well. Together with the latest Shadow Gallery (Room v), this is the CD I've been playing over and again for the past month.

Attention all metal heads & DT Fans who like the heavy side of things.....This CD ROCKS!!!! The gtrs. are intense (many solo's!!!!yippie!!!) - the drums/bass are loud & progressive - the words are a little rough & rugged, but life ,though great, is not allways easy & James is.....James - One of the best singers in prog. rock.

If you don't like heavy music, you probably will not dig this. "BUT PLEASE DON'T BASH IT"

I was a bit disappointed after listening to this a couple of times. I guess I was hoping for more of a cross between Frameshift and Dream Theater, but got something that was more in-your-face type stuff. I don't mind in-your-face if it strikes a real chord with my imagination and heart, but somehow this just felt kind of dry. It didn't spark me much. Of course seeing him perform this live could be a whole different story. It lacks much of the progressive element that I find appealing in a lot of his other work. I even like the Mulmuzzler stuff much more than this. I guess it depends if you just like screaming metal or more diversified learnings. James you are a fantastic vocalist, but don't leave out the variation of content dude!

Great band. Great guitar work, vocals and song writing. I think this is a fantastic solo effort by Dream Theater's vocalist. I hope to hear more.

Well I was very surprised to hear LaBrie sounding more like what he probably would like to sound like. I'd give anything for him to stick to his solo work and let Dream Theater go instrumental or maybe snatch Geoff Tate for their vocals. LaBrie sounds very commercial on this CD and it seems to work for him.

Sure is better than his forced vocals on the DT Master of Puppets Bootleg.

Meiner Meinung nach beinhaltet "EOP" eine neue Art Progressive Metal "at its best".

Grande album con Marco Sfogli e Mike Mangini. Drained finale top Song.
