Over the last two years, I have purchased eight 1TB Western Digital external drives, including six "My Passport" and, most recently, two "Element". Of these, three have given me serious problems, which is a staggering percentage and really reflects very poorly on the dependability of the WD brand. One "My Passport" simply quit working without reason or warning after a little over a year of use, resulting in the extremely frustrating loss of nearly 800 GB of video files. Another "My Passport" was DOA and I had to return it. Finally, one of the two "Element", I purchased last is also defective and will not store properly many of the .mp4 video files I am trying to copy to it. I will have to return this one as well. This has forced me to store all of the files I wish to preserve in duplicate on separate drives to try and prevent loss. Finally, I have also been very dissapointed and frustrated by the fact that the later models (2016 on) of these WD external drives can no longer be read by most Blu-ray players or "smart" TVs, whereas earlier models could. When contacted, WD would not offer any explanation (let alone remedy) for this change. Overall, I am extremely dissapointed with these WD external drives and most likely will not purchase another one

I bought this drive to expand the storage capacity of my PlayStation 4. I own a 500gb model, and, although that seems like a lot of storage, it really doesn't go far. It amounts to a few games and some other miscellaneous content.
It got to the point where I would have to delete my favorite games, just to play something new. That's not something that I wanted to continue to do.
It took literally 5 seconds to format this drive as an external storage device, and around 20 minutes to transfer most of my games from the PS4 storage to this drive. I transferred roughly 300gb.
Now I have plenty of spare memory.
The PS4 will automatically use the drive as your storage, unless you choose to revert back to using the PS4 drive. You can switch between drives whenever you wish.
So far, this drive works great. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between playing games stored on this drive vs playing them in the PS4 internal drive. That's exactly what I'd hoped for.
The drive is very small. I haven't noticed much noise while the drive is being used, just a slight hum, and that was with my ear about 2 inches away. I have only one very minor issue with the drive: the annoying blue light that flashes regularly when the drive is in use. This annoyance was easily fixed by facing it towards the wall. Just be aware that if you have it facing toward yourself while in a dark room, you will very aware of the drives presence.
I'm so glad I bought this drive. It has freed me! I am now able to play all the games I want, without the frustration of having to constantly delete and reinstall my favorite games.

I can't believe this only worked for 1 month! This is a complete disaster since all my files for school are on it. The 30 day refund window is closed so on top of losing everything I lost $57 dollars. The drive was formatted for a Mac and was used for time machine, then out of the blue it's not showing up on my Mac.
I will never purchase another WD again!

PS4 automatically recognized it and walked me through just a few very simple clicks to format it and make it my primary storage device. Can’t give it more than 4 stars as yet because I’ve only had it for a day, I’ll have to see how it’s lifespan works out. However, because it will not be moving around at all, I highly doubt there will be problems caused by being shaken or jostled as most portables are. So far, great storage for a great price.

A portable hard drive like this is essential when you are working with large Audio/Video projects. Cloud space is great, but a physical hard disk is always an affordable insurance policy in case your files are compromised. It does not spell it out in the description, but this is a real hard disk. I was under the impression this was solid state (flash memory). It makes sense that there is a classic style hard disk inside given the price of the item. That being said, I would recommend it to anyone as paranoid as I am about saving their files. It plays well with PC and MAC, you just have to do some formatting on the front end and Western Digital's Website will walk you through it.

Pour l'alimentation, il s'auto-alimente avec l'usb quand il est connecté à ton ordinateur, donc pas besoin d'alim supplémentaire.
Le disque est plutôt léger et compacte. Il rentre aisément dans une poche (voir photo).

Le transfert en USB3, est très satisfaisant, et permet de charger des photos et vidéos très rapidement. (50Mo/s)

Ce disque dur est compatible avec mac. Il suffit qu'il soit formaté en MS-DOS FAT.
Il est également compatible avec les versions Windows 8.1 et Windows 10

Je suis très satisfait de cet achat, surtout un prix si attractif, je le recommande.

Zunächst zum positiven: die Platte ist sehr kompakt und, wie andere 2.5 Zoll Platten auch, ohne Stromkabel verwendbar. Das Gehäuse macht auch einen soliden, wertigen Eindruck. Dennoch bin ich der Meinung, dass man die Platte nicht als Backup verwenden sollte, der Grund dafür ist, dass sich im Gehäuse keine Platte mit SATA-Anschluss befindet, sondern eine Platte bei der der Micro-USB Anschluss direkt auf die Platine gelötet ist. Dies machen beim 2.5 Format offenkundig immer mehr Hersteller so, vermutlich, weil man dadurch Platz einsparen kann. Der entscheidende Nachteil ist: wenn der Micro-USB Anschluss hinüber ist, sind die Daten auch weg. Wenn man nun bedenkt, dass dieser Anschluss ziemlich empfindlich ist und wie gravierend der Ausfall einer Backup Platte sein kann, sollte man sich nach einem anderen Modell umsehen. Laut diverser Videos soll z.B. die Seagate Expansion noch eine SATA-Platte enthalten. Diese kann man dann bei Bedarf ausbauen und mit einem SATA-USB Adapter oder Gehäuse versehen und auch dann weiterverwenden, wenn der ursprüngliche USB-Anschluss kaputt ist - der USB Anschluss ist in solchen Fällen auf den SATA-Anschluss nur draufgesteckt und lässt sich abziehen.
Fazit: Keine Kaufempfehlung

A portable drive that I have pushed to the limits without a single failure.

I chose this WD Portable Drive because I have found WD drives to be exceptionally reliable. I have three WD MirrrorServers with a total of six 4Tb drives (24Tb in total), plus another two WD 1Tb drives in my PC and laptop and a 2.5Tb expansion drive. I admit the server drives are professional quality (Red) drives, but I figure that any company that can make such high endurance drives must direct some of that experience into their standard drives.

In practice I have found the Elements Portable drive has been very resilient to the occasional knocks (even whilst running) and has remained exceptionally reliable whilst being exchanged between several PCs, an Android tablet and a Linux digital video recorder. I have reformatted it a couple of times and transferred tens of terra-bytes of data through it, without a single loss of a file.

I totally recommend WD, this portable drive is a prime example of their excellent quality and reliablity.

Perfekte Festplatte für Datensicherung oder Aufnahme

Ich war auf der Suche nach einer Festplatte die ich an meinen Receiver zur Aufnahme von TV-Sendungen, Filmen, Serien usw. als erstes kam ich auf die Toshiba Canvio Basics 1 TB externe Festplatte (6,4 cm (2,5 Zoll), USB 3.0) schwarz welche aber für Aufnahmezwecke meiner Meinung nach ungeeignet ist. Nachzulesen in meiner Rezession über diese Festplatte.
Auf jeden Fall habe ich die WD 1TB Elements direkt nach Eintreffen angesteckt und los gings. Die Festplatte wurde sofort vom Receiver erkannt und konnte verwendet werden.
Ich habe die Festplatte nun seid Ende Januar 2015 und sie hat mich noch nie im Stich gelassen. Ob HD oder SD ist völlig egal. Die FP hängt nun seid knapp 2 Jahren durchgehend an meinem Receiver und zeigt noch keine Alterserscheinungen. Desweiteren habe ich ca 50 Filme aufgenommen für den Junior und die Platte ist nur zu ca. 40% voll. Also ist hier auch mit einem TB genügend Platz vorhanden.

Se vi serve per un uso tipo chiavetta usb va molto bene, ma evitate di metterci file importanti senza aver fatto backup in un altro hdd. Questo perchè il disco inserito non ha l'attacco SATA, è saldato alla scheda logica e alla presa USB; quindi se una di queste si brucia, per recuperare i dati bisogna rivolgersi a ditte specializzate e, ovviamente, pagate fior di quattrini. Meglio un disco SATA e un box esterno.
Io ho fatto il reso, anche perchè non era scritto da nessuna parte della mancanza della porta sata.

Drive was wanted for use as a back up system using 'Time Machine'. After reading a very helpful review from someone who purchased this drive for their Mac (though it states it is for the Windows operating system), I decided to give it a go, as the Windows version is quite a bit cheaper than the Mac version, with a view to manually re-formatting it to be compatible with my OS X MacBook Pro (Version 10.8.5), as the reviewer suggested. Well, it was surprisingly even easier than I thought, as I plugged in the WD Elements drive using the supplied USB cable into my Mac and the icon showed up on the desktop, and a window automatically popped up and asked me if I wanted to re-format the drive to work with Time Machine, I clicked 'Erase' to do this, it took just a few minutes to re-format and then after that, automatically started to back up my hard disk using Time Machine. I had about 14.5GB to back up and it took about 19 minutes in total. I don't know if that's a good speed or not, but I was very happy with it. It did the job I wanted it to do. If you want to format the drive to be compatible for both PC and Mac then you may need to format the drive using MAC Disk Utility rather than letting the Mac do it automatically like I did (I will only be using it on a Mac). But if you Google 'formatting an external drive from pc to mac' it will explain how to do this. I can't comment on durability etc., as I have only just got this drive, but so far, so good. It came well packaged and two days earlier than estimated - very pleased. And thank you to Mr Chong for his review - you saved me some money!

Great...while it lasted

I thought this drive was amazing, apart from the stupidly short (approx 30cm) cable...until it stopped working and i can't retrieve the data. The short cable means the drive gets jerked about every time you move the laptop and massively reduced its lifespan. For something that didn't get used that often i'd have expected a bit more from it.The arm inside has stuck in the 'on' position so the disk can't rotate and the data can't be removed by just partitioning the drive- it being a hardware fault rather than the simpler software one. Have since given up with hard drives and use Amazon's unlimited photo storage which comes with prime membership which has been great.

Inexpensive fast no frills drive

This is a small neat drive, which is powered over the USB lead. It only needs one USB socket unlike the last external drive I bought which took up two (the second connection being needed to get enough power). It is basic, with a plastic case, but it feels robust enough to knock about in my laptop bag. The speed is high, way higher than my previous USB2.0 external drive, going at about 100MB per second restoring a backup, and about two thirds of that when writing . I tend to choose WD hard drives as my experience has been that in the long term they are reliable, though I've not has this one long. Online tests suggest that though this is cheaper than the WD My Passport drive, it is faster!

Outstanding portable drive

I needed to carry around some portable storage and this drive was less than £40 for 1TB so I snapped it up.
Build quality is small yet solid and has a matt black finish. The underside has 4 small rubber feet so it won't slide around on an uneven desk surface.
The LED indicator on the edge of the drive lights up quite bright to indicate disk activity.
The drive when connected to a USB 3.0 port gave me Read and Write speeds of 110MBps which is very good and consistent with USB 3 performance. Even my internal laptop storage drive tops out at 100MBps!

The price/performance combined with solid build quality is hard to beat on this drive.

Bought this a year ago, still works, good capacity, and as a 2.5inch external drive, has a very low profile consistent with the form-factor of a passport. Initially when I used it I did not have USB 3.0 ports, and I found it to work slower than other USB 2.0 external hard drives, so this is something to bear in mind. If you have a USB 3.0 external hard drive but do not have USB 3.0 ports, then I would definitely recommend you pick some up in the form of a PCI express card, a new motherboard, or even the front header of a new PC case, as you will see an improvement in transfer speeds with files transferring almost 10 times faster than on the old USB 2.0 interface.

Bought this as a combined backup device and also to transfer large amounts of data from one machine to another. 1 TB probably isn't classed as a lot these days, but it is far more than I need, so there's plenty left.

It has been used as a backup to store the current directory structure before I embarked on running a suite of self written C# programs to reorganise, rename and Zip/archive thousands of files to tidy up what had become an utter mess. If anything goes wrong I have the originals to return to.

I didn't bother with the more expensive My Passport Ultra version, as I don't need the extra cloud backup paid-for features.

It's fast, silent and reliable, exactly what I wanted.

Price point and size is sound

However I note previous reviewer mentioned that the transfer rate was below par averaging on 40-45mb/s.

I found the same with mine, this is well below USB3 specs. By chance I decided to swap the USB3 cable from my old 1TB WD element drive and the speed shot up to 80 - 90Mb/s.

that being said

he hard drive is nice and compact for taking it wherever you need to. I'm not going to write about how fast this drive is to the nano second, just know its much faster than USB2, which is good. I only have 1 warning for people who want to use it how I intended to use it, which was to have ALL my media (films, pictures, music, etc) on one drive, then plug it into my LG smart TV and have everything to hand through my TV. I found that a lot of the films were very jerky and un-watchable therefore to overcome this I had to split the drive into 2 smaller partitions of about 500GB and 1 large partition of about 1TB and all the films went back to being watchable. I assume this isn't the hard drives fault, its probably the TVs USB controller not being suitable for such a large drive, therefore the drive still gets 5 stars. Just to clarify, the jerky film thing was only when it was connected to my TV, when it was connected to the PC I didn't have any problems and didn't need to partition the drive.

Purchased based on good reviews and has met these expectations so far. Easy to set up and use and great capacity. The only downsides are, it sometimes continues to run, well after my pc has been shut down and it takes quite a time to load when first accessed after boot up.

Update 24/01/2016. Drive has expired, unable to access and freezes my laptop, just inside the limited 2 year warranty. My usage is not great and I have hardly used it as a portable. Very disappointing.
