Be warned, too – this is not really a "toy" in the conventional sense. Lots of very small parts, dodgy labelling of those parts, and the need for a very deft touch to install them make this not really suitable for young people, unless it is with some degree of supervision. Teens or adept tweens should be ok with it, though.
Over the last nine months we have been building both custom circuits of our own design and also following along from the manual. The manual begins with extremely simple circuits like getting a light bulb to light (in this case, a LED) and then moves on to resistors in series and parallel, simple charging circuits with capacitors, etc... until at the end of the manual fairly complex circuits can be assembled with multiple integrated circuits (ICs). There are also many fun circuits that are great learning experiences for kids, like assembling an AM radio, making weird sound machines and motion detectors. This kit is also appropriate for introducing electrical circuits to highly gifted children as early as age 6 or 7, gifted children around age 8 or 9 and children of normal intelligence around perhaps, age 11 or 12.
The only downside to this kit (as many other reviewers have noted) is that unless you already possess a mathematics/physics/engineering background, you will need to purchase some additional guides or textbooks if you really want to understand why a circuit works the way it does (or if you plan to develop your own custom circuits). For example, in the manual, you do get to build a simple charging circuit with a capacitor but the manual only gives a few sentences as to how the capacitor stores and releases charge. They do not explain anything in detail about how a time constant is derived or the importance of differential equations and complex variables to circuit behavior. So the reader is not exposed to the basic fundamental physical and mathematical relations that are important to circuit construction. But for the audience this product is aimed at, and for the purpose of interesting intelligent children in learning something about electronics, it is only a minor omission.
Overall, I like this kit and it would cost a great deal more to assemble piecemeal all the components that Elenco includes in this kit. Several of the components are a little bit on the cheap end but not to the detriment of reliability. For the $99 I paid for this, I am fairly happy and it is helping my son to view electronics as something which is more like a model kit than like a mathematics textbook. Many of the circuits elicit a learning response from him and he seems to enjoy trying to figure out why certain circuits behave as they do. The only real items that would enrich this kit, would be an aforementioned detailed explanation text and a multi-meter (which allows you to view in real time voltages, resistance and current). So far, pretty happy and I would rate this kit as 4.5 out of 5 stars.
