I didn't like the solder pads on the circuit board. The pads came off to easy, when I had to make corrections. I had a hard time with the small parts getting them in their correct spot. I not good at this. I've been soldering in electronics for 40 years.. I'm trying to learn SMT. It's not the products fault.

This might be good for beginners - but also very likely to be a bit frustrating. The reason is the pads are TOO large for effective soldering (some are INSANELY too large), they'll draw a bunch of heat from your soldering iron (and I used a good Haako) and you'll be cursing because the solder won't stick to the pads or flow where it's supposed to. Good board design for SMT/SMD usually have some thermal relief around solder pads. Also the board is super cheap, single sides, the pads pop up with a bit of heat and there's no silkscreen to help with placement. Utter crap, really. Seems like a very amateurish kit that a beginner will quickly find frustrating and perhaps give up on any hope of SMT soldering, when it really is not as hard as this kit will make it seem. Also should have (for that price) some with some tweezers, which folks are unlikely to have, and the piece of wire wasn't even pre-stripped!. The brief instruction on solder technique is insufficient and didn't cover handling the ICs. That said you do get to practice with a decent variety of the larger SMT components, and you can learn a little bit from the simple circuit. But not worth even half the price.

YouTube has some good vids on how to solder SMT, and there are decent cheap kits on EBay for SMT practice which may be more representative of what a real SMT board is like.

Man, this is hard! Prepare to be challenged! You will need some very small pointed tweezers to do this; and a lighted magnifier is really necessary. In a few places the documentation is difficult to decipher especially for the LEDs. One of them is shown in one direction on the instructions but the pads would indicate a different way. They have two tiny legs on one side and a single on the other. The body is about the size of a third of a grain of rice so it is difficult to keep in place while soldering. I dropped one of them on the floor twice and managed to find it but it was tough. Most tools have enough residual magnetism to pick them up and move them out of place. You will need a good, heat controlled, soldering iron with a small conical tip. I would advise not using the solder that comes with the kit and instead using 0.015" (.38) mm Ersin Multicore 60/40 solder or the Kester equivalent. A flux pen or applicator would also be helpful. This is a leaning kit and working with surface mount devices takes practice. Prepare to be disappointed with your first results. I think some tooling for holding down the parts for soldering would be more useful that tape.

Decent inexpensive intro to surface mount assembly. The parts are huge by modern standards (1206, i.e. 3mm x 1.5), which makes them easy to place and solder, but it'll be a shock when you run into 0402 (a third the size). My biggest criticism is that no spare parts are supplied. I was very lucky to find the two that did zing off to the furthest corner of the bench. There ought to be one spare of each of the small components, the cost would be insignificant.

The "switch" to turn it on is made of some metal that is utterly unsolderable. I tried everything to tin it, including a large array of fluxes. Nothing worked. I didn't really mind since I have no use for it now I've built it, but if I did want it to work I'd have to figure something out. Also, one of the LEDs was dead on arrival.

Overpriced for what it provides

The good: Clear instructions in proper English, printed professionally, and including good illustrations. Provides practice for a variety of component techniques.

The bad: The kit only includes just enough components to build the kit if you don't lose or damage any of them. Given that the components are quite small, and the purpose of the kit is to learn the skill of successfully using the small components, it's reasonable to expect that the student may accidentally lose or damage a component. That really reduces the value of the kit. Plus, the manufacturer is slow to respond to email requesting service parts.

While the kit helps you practice the basics of surface-mount technology, it only uses relatively large SMD components, and there are relatively few of them. There are other SMD practice kits on Amazon that offer many more parts—and thus more practice—for a lower price.

This was so much fun, my second kit this weekend the first one was Elenco SP3B Practical Soldering Project Kit . I am repairing smart devices and game systems with a GQ 5200 rework station I bought on ebay, it was unavailable here and a real nice product made in the USA with a warranty and a bunch of accessories to go with it. It was so much fun to do I am getting more Elenco Products Elenco Radio Controlled Car Soldering and I am going to do this with my 8yr old son.

The best part about this was when I had to trouble shot it, basically I had to recheck my soldering and make sure I had not made any bridges on the IC's.

Very Rewarding!!!!!!!!!!!!! I highly recommend it.

I am so ready to do many many more Elenco Kits!

I ordered this kit because I needed a way to practice surface-mount soldering techniques without literally burning through sensitive and expensive components in a real world project. The kit comes with great instructions, 'extra' test parts, and space to work without damaging the project itself. The circuit has several interesting lessons for novice/intermediate electronics enthusiasts, placing it a step above the usual blinking light/noise maker kits out there - even though it is in actuality a blinking light/noise maker kit. The kit was very helpful in preparing me to successfully build a prototype of a design I have been working on for some time, and for that I extend my gratitude to Elenco and highly recommend it.
