This book presents key features of a paradigm that incorporates the studies and teachings of the author over a period of more than forty years. It has been described as one of the most effective human “How-To” books ever written. No wonder, since the author has devoted his somewhat eclectic life to the discovery and sharing of “practical truth.”
These experiences included college entry at age 14, the Peace Corps in Ghana, West Africa as a science, math and sports teacher, the Civil Rights Movement (as plaintiff in two important U.S. Supreme Court cases), Harvard Law School, extensive writing and speaking tours in North America, Europe and Africa on topics including psychology, philosophy, the physical sciences, the law of attraction, manifestation and meditation and religious history. These were important parts of a rich background that led to this book and numerous recorded talks, discourses and other publications over many decades. Elephant in the Room explores the complexities involved in managing the conflicts that often rage between the higher aspirations of an individual and those associated with the survival apparatus of the physical and mental bodies. At various junctures, every individual has come face to face with levels of cooperation and conflict between these dimensions of life. There are many complex subtleties in this relationship. However, this book shows how to achieve a detached awareness of what is going on and the ways this competition for control manifests itself. Once we stand back and observe what is happening, we are able to use a variety of tools and techniques to insure that our higher aspirations and goals take priority and are ultimately realized. To explore this dimension of life, Elephant in the Room identifies and unravels the controlling impulses of the physical body that often refuse to cooperate. It examines the range of responses one can expect from the physical machine and it’s hijacking of our metal apparatus in resisting changes that we genuinely want to make. This book shows how to encourage and bring about its full cooperation and participation in the changes you want to make. The prime admonition of Socrates was, “Know Thyself.” The wisdom of this advice cannot be over emphasized. Without taking the time to understand the manner in which a person functions as a living consciousness, utilizing physical, emotional and mental vehicles in this dimension, s/he will never be able to manage these competing impulses to optimal effect. We are trapped and will remain so until we reach the point that is often called “self-realization.” Then we will understand the marvel of our makeup and how to view our physical bodies from different perspectives while using this magnificently complex vehicle to fulfill our purposes here. This alone is a compelling reason to explore and master the subject. On this journey of discovery, we will explore the latest research involving habit formation, and how habits can be broken and changed. These techniques enable us to follow the guidance of the higher-self rather than the impulses of self-gratification that often lead us astray. Therefore, the objective of this book is to bring together insights, information and experiences that enable us to confront this “Elephant in the Room.” Once we recognize the power of physical impulses and patterns of counterproductive behavior these create, we are better able to take control of our lives. This knowledge helps us to bridge the gap between science, religion, philosophy and the inner dimensions of life involving higher consciousness. The resulting paradigm meets the practical demands of life while directing our actions on a path that leads to fulfilling higher aspirations. As with any endeavor, this journey comes with its share of ups and downs. However, it is precisely these triumphs and setbacks that constitute the foundation of a deeper understanding of how to manage the "Elephant in the Room."
