From the Inside Flap

Spanning fifty years of Joellyn Duesberry's art career, this book offers insightful writings that delve into the defining moments of her career, from childhood tragedy, to the transforming painting sessions with Richard Diebenkorn, and her subsequent move to the West.

About the Author

Nationally recognized landscape painter Joellyn Duesberry divides her time between studios in Denver, Colorado, and Millbrook, New York, and has painted plein air around the world. She began exhibiting in New York City in 1979, and has since had fifteen New York solo exhibitions, with recent retrospectives at the Century Association, Denver Art Museum, and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, summer 2011. In 1986, she was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant, which enabled her to work with Richard Diebenkorn who encouraged her to try monotype printmaking. Since that experience, she has actively produced and exhibited monotypes alongside her plein air paintings. An exhibition of her monotypes, The Covenant of Seasons, was organized through the Virginia Art Museum and traveled nationally for a decade. Duesberry's paintings are in numerous museum, public, and private collections in the United States and abroad. In 2005, a PBS documentary, Joellyn Duesberry: Dialogue with the Artist, was made of her life, work, and creative process.

Several years ago I was in the Denver, CO, area and the newspaper gave notice of a Joellyn Duesberry art exhibit in nearby Englewood. I enjoyed the pictures immensely and I found video of Joellyn Duesberry describing her creative process very interesting. Her website joellynduesberry.com tells a lot about her and shows a lot of her art.

I was delighted subsequently to learn of the availability of her book *Elevated Perspective.* The amazon.com page for this book prominently mentions her "writing" in the book but does not say much about the pictures! Joellyn Duesberry's description of her artistic evolution is interesting, but it is not lengthy. She does say "Albert Camus and Virginia Woolf have been quoted as saying the whole of creative life is devoted to retrieval of first-sense impressions. This pictorial gathering of my life as a painter stands as a testament that I have come full-circle, and that emotional abundance remains with me, inexhaustible as memory itself."

But the pictures are what make this book spectacular. The color is a delight. The settings are evocative, e.g. of places I have been in the west. Many states and a few countries are represented: NY 13, CO 42, MT 4, ME 24, NM 30, France 9, Italy 3, and a small number of CA, WY, UT, VA, MA, WA. Subjects include seashore/marsh/bog 18, ranches/farms/orchards/rural towns 19, French and Italian landscapes 10, western landscapes 70, quarries 8, gardens 4, cityscapes 6, colorful junkyards 4, wonderful waterfalls 2, Hudson River 1. There is a nice "Abstract Fantasy of New Mexico 1."

I took this book apart so I could pin pages serially on a whiteboard on my wall. One can delightfully get lost looking into these pictures.
