- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2016I ordered and read this book due to coming across a reference to the smog that killed 60 people in Donora, Pennsylvania in 1948 in a book of essays that I was reading by E.B. White. As the essay by White was written for the New Yorker in 1956, he would have assumed by referencing Donora that his readers were familiar with it, therefore he did not explain the reference. I, as a reader in 2016, needed to look it up. I was astounded to find out that 60 people died and 6,000 people were made ill by the toxicity of the air in this community due to the assorted mills in the area and geography of the area that caused the air to stagnate. I, then, found a reference to an essay about this incident in this book "Eleven Blue Men", so I ordered it. It is very well written, and I am finding that reading essays written during time periods that are now historical, but were current essays for that time period is an illuminating way to get a true glimpse into that time period. Rather than looking back through our distorted lense of modern times, it is like taking an evening stroll along dark streets, lights on in the houses, curtains not fully drawn, glimpsing people's lives who are unaware of you passing by. It is eery and real.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2022Although in the “modern age” much of epidemiology is relayed to the public as information from the CDC, the daily business of disease outbreaks is performed by those on the ground - “shoeleather” epidemiologists. Berton Bouchée highlights reality in his intriguing short story narratives of medical detection. A classic read by every Public Health School graduate. An easy read for those without university medical education. Must Read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2011I read this book decades ago, in high school. At the time, the genre of medical detection wasn't as common as it is today. I was fascinated by the stories. Each chapter told a different story, where the medical investigators had to figure out what was causing the illness. The book engrossed me to such an extent that I actually changed my habits to try to avoid some of the situations in the book (I hesitate to reveal details because it will spoil the suspense). If you enjoy medical stories and detective stories, you will enjoy this mingling of the two.
