About the Author

In 1970, while students at Humboldt State University, Mike and Judy Phillips began what would become the One Way BookShop as a small, informal source of Christian books and materials for their fellow students. Over the next two decades God prospered those small beginnings, and now the bookstore is a thriving part of the Humboldt County Christian community.

Family is very important to Mike. He and his wife, Judy, have taught their three sons, Patrick, Robin and Gregory, at home throughout their education. Home schooling enables the family to frequently accompany Mike in his work-related travels.

This is one of the first Christian fiction books I have read--it was a great first pick. Michael Phillips has a great way of setting the stage in this story--giving just enough details for the reader to get a firm grasp of the setting and characters without being overly burdensom. The historical background was extremely interesting as well. I was actually transported back in time. I was also truly amazed at how Michael Phillips intertwined the gospel of salvation into the story in a realistic and relevant way. After reading this book, I feel compelled to read every other book from Michael Phillips--especially if they are this good! I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

In The Eleventh Hour Phillips manages to capture the emotions so long untold. This book begins pre-WWII in Europe with a loving, Godly man and his beautiful daughter who is still more child than woman. After they meet some American diplomats who are soon invtied for a visit you come to Lebanshaus, or the House of Life. Baron von Dortmann and his family have always opened their doors to everyone seeking spirtual and physical peace. He teaches his new friends the gift of God and his daughter Sabina helps her new friend Matthew in many ways. Secrets unfold along the way making this book suspensful near the end where the remarkable power of God will show itself in full force as it does throughout the book! Anyone who seeks spirtual fullfillment, wants to learn about Nazi persecution or just likes Michael Phillips will most certainly not be dissapointed in this book.

Michael Phillips has written an outstanding novel of mammoth proportion compared to most Christian fiction of today. The Eleventh Hour is more typical of the 1990’s era of which it was written. My copy has 502 pages of somewhat smaller size font. It is a book written not only for the reader’s enjoyment, but also as an avenue to spiritual growth through reading a wonderful story. There is much wisdom among these pages, so I would recommend taking the time to ponder and consider the words within.

The plot is pretty straight forward and follows two aristocratic, German families at the cusp of WWII, as the family members make decisions about supporting Hitler and his racially motivated ideology. It is evident the author did extensive research of the times and the people, which brings authenticity to the storyline as it progresses through the years of 1937-1944. The author’s skillful writing is easily able to pull the reader into the story and transport her/him into that time and place.

The main characters are multidimensional and definitely seem like real people—friends or foes. As the book ended, I felt truly connected to my “friends” and look forward to reading the second book in The Secret of the Rose series.

I recommend this book to readers who are not looking for a quick read, who are interested in WWII literature and who prefer a story with a spiritual focus.

Such an inspiring story of faith, courage and commitment set in Prussia during Nazi reign. The books are filled with suspense, drama, enduring faith and enduring love. Excellent historical fiction series.

I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next book in the series. I liked the quality of the writing and its excellence although sometimes it felt like descriptions went on for pages. Wonderful Christian message about the servants God lifts up in time of adversity and how He uses their life and his Spirit to orchestrate His will. I was extremely moved by the closeness and oneness "The Baron" had with His Father and His willingness to always listen for His voice in "all things"

This book addresses all the levels of society, all the different personalities and true lasting friendships. The value of tending to the things / persons in your life is also very inspiring. Michael writes a story that you cant put down. To walk in His ways and do His will is the most wonderful thing on earth.

This book we followed up with the remainder of the series and still have them on our book shelf for another read. We found them interesting and held the desire to keep going from chapter to chapter. Enjoy this author and his ability to weave the history from the past into great fiction books.
